It’s officially outwear season. And, if you’re one of those people still clinging on to those summer dresses that didn’t get much of a ride this year, the truth of the matter is, your wardrobe has moved on.

While stocking up on a heap of new season pieces might seem a strange move considering many of us are back under a semi lockdown again, you are allowed to socialise outdoors, if you stick to the rule of six. And of course, you wouldn’t want to be ill-prepared for the chilly sessions of winter mingling, would you?

Yes, it may conjure up images of superheroes, but if the autumn/winter 2021 catwalks had anything to say, it’s that ponchos and capes are officially IN. Balmain, Proenza Schouler and JW Anderson were among the designers routing for this warm and cosy cover-up and we are not complaining.

From knitted cable ponchos that feel like you’re being wrapped in your favourite blanket to the more equestrian, buckle-fronted styles that have an air of young Princess Anne (if you saw the last season of The Crown , you’ll know what we mean), ponchos and capes are a great alternative to your usual winter coat.

They’re chic, comfortable and stop you from getting too overheated (hello, arm holes). The art of wearing one without looking like you’ve completely lost your shape is to keep your lower half more form-fitting - jeans, leather trousers, pencil skirts - anything that hugs your curves will help you balance out the looser shape.
