When testing each, I ordered a week's worth of food and snacks before scoring them based on delivery, sourcing, freshness of ingredients, and nutritional information provided. I also considered other factors such as how varied the cuisine and meal plan options were, portion size, and how easy the recipe cards were to follow.

There are a few services in this edit that haven’t been tested; for those, we’ve referred to customer reviews and expert knowledge. Find out more about how we test here.

Your meal prep FAQs, answered:

Are healthy meal delivery services worth it?

“Healthy eating works best when it fits around real life,” says Gousto's in-house nutritionist, Sarah Fancourt. "From my experience as a nutritionist, meal delivery services can be a genuinely helpful support for people who want to eat well without striving for perfection.

She continues: "One of the biggest barriers to healthy eating is time. While many people know what they should be eating, it’s the lack of headspace to plan, shop and portion meals that often gets in the way during busy weeks. Having meals organised in advance can make it easier to eat nourishing food more regularly and rely less on ultra-processed convenience options.

“When meals are thoughtfully designed, they can help support overall health by encouraging a better balance of protein, fibre and a variety of plant foods, all of which play a role in digestion and gut health. Over time, these small, consistent choices help build sustainable, healthy-ish habits, rather than promoting restrictive or short-term approaches.”

But if the question is ‘will meal kits save me money?’, I'd argue not. Based on the meal kits I tested, most pre-portioned fresh meals won't save you much directly. In fact, some of them are rather expensive.

Are meal prep services ‘healthy’?

“Meal prep services can be healthy, but quality really matters,” says Sarah Fancourt. "Health isn’t just about calories; it’s about the overall nutritional profile of a meal. The most nourishing options tend to centre around nutrient-rich foods, particularly vegetables, wholegrains, pulses and legumes, which provide fibre, vitamins and minerals that support digestion and overall wellbeing.

""It’s also about how meals are put together. Services where meals are cooked at home from fresh ingredients, such as recipe-box services like Gousto, often offer more flexibility and transparency than fully pre-prepared meals.

"Dishes that combine vegetables, fibre-rich carbohydrates, a source of protein and some healthy fats tend to feel more balanced and satisfying, making it easier to eat well consistently."

How do I get the most out of a healthy meal delivery service?

To get the most our of your meal delivery kit, I'd argue that you need to choose different meals every week rather than constantly gravitating towards the same favourites. Use your recipe box as a chance to experiment with plant-based and vegetarian meals if you don't already, and choose meals that feel realistic from a time point of view — AKA, if you're signing up to a meal delivery box because you're time-poor, don't order recipes that take 50 minutes to prepare.

Fancourt adds: "To get the most out of a healthy meal delivery service, it helps to look beyond calorie counts and focus on nourishment. Choosing meals that include a variety of plant-based ingredients — such as vegetables, wholegrains and beans — can boost fibre intake while also increasing variety and micronutrients.

“Protein choices matter too. Mixing things up between meat, fish, and plant-based options can help keep meals satisfying and nutritionally balanced.”

Treat the recipe cards as a mini-culinary course, the skills you learn, like how to properly sear a protein or how to add extra veggies into meals, increases culinary confidence, making you less reliant on unhealthy convenience foods in the future,” adds Registered Nutritionist and Senior Recipe Developer at Green Chef, Lily Keeling.

Which food delivery service is rated the best?

The cheapest recipe box overall is actually Simply Cook – but that's because you have to provide the fresh ingredients yourself. Simply Cook provides the spices, and that is all. If you're looking for everything – from meat and vegetables to cards and dairy produce – to be provided, then the cheapest is Gousto, followed by HelloFresh.

Is Gousto or HelloFresh cheaper?

At the time of writing, Gousto is cheaper than HelloFresh by about £10. That said, it's worth noting that both recipe box companies have introductory offers running almost constantly. For instance, HelloFresh is offering 60% off your first box as well as free dessert for life right now. Your friends might have referral codes they can share, too.
