We like the mahogany salon boat, which guests can use to tour the canals.

Why we love it: While the Red Light District has a bit of a bad rap, it’s still one of the most iconic neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. Best hotel with a central location
Why we love it: art'otel Amsterdam is the perfect place for someone who wants to take in all the city has to offer. Being right opposite Amsterdam Centraal Station means you can step off the train and be checked in within minutes, which any frequent traveller will know makes all the difference. From there, most of the city is walkable, with some of the best spots literally on your doorstep. You'll find yourself heading out on foot to places like Dam Square and Anne Frank House without really planning routes, dipping into markets and cutting down beautiful, hidden streets just by wandering past. The rooms are very generously sized for such a central spot, with enough space to properly relax into your stay, with a clean, modern design that feels cool and effortless. There’s also a creative edge to the hotel, with contemporary artwork throughout, that ties nicely into Amsterdam’s wider character, so you feel like you're exploring the culture of the city before you've even made it out of the door.

Best Amsterdam hotel for a unique stay
Why we love it: If you are looking for a unique stay, then it certainly doesn’t get more unique than staying in actual vintage crane in KNSM Island, the former eastern docklands. While The Crane by YAYS is a bit further out than other hotels on our list, the novelty of spending the night in a converted 1950s crane certainly makes up for the distance. Surprisingly, the interiors are pretty lush – offering panoramic views of Amsterdam Noord. There is a small living room and kitchen on the first level, then a cosy bedroom and bathroom on level two. A small staircase leads up to a glass box bedroom on level three, which is an Instagrammer’s dream. It is the perfect spot to watch the barges go by during both sunrise and sunset. Plus, guests are given free bicycles to roam the city. Keep a lookout for The Crane manual – which tells the story of Henk Roos, the former operator. Henk’s toolbox can be found under the sofa in the living room and has everything from old tools and photos from when The Crane was still a working crane.

Why we love it: There’s something supremely sexy about the interiors at Hotel TwentySeven, which is a 16-suite boutique hotel located on top of Amsterdam’s most exclusive private club. Hotel TwentySeven is located in Dam Square just a ten-minute walk away from Central Station and all the main museums. The hotel itself — part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World — feels like a private club from the moment you enter the dimly lit reception, which is adorned with sumptuous damask wallpapers, silk drapes and opulent chaise lounges. The same maximalist décor extends to all the suites – which each come with its own butler. There is a Michelin-starred restaurant and also a vibey cocktail bar. While there is no spa – each suite has its own hot tub and fitness gear. You can even book personal trainers, massages and other wellness treatments directly to your suite – which all add to the romance of Hotel TwentySeven. We think it’s the best hotel in Amsterdam to lovers looking to spice things up during their Dutch getaway.

Best five-star hotel in Amsterdam
Why we love it: The Waldorf Astoria is without a doubt one of the most elegant five-star hotels in the city. The hotel occupies six gorgeous 17th-century and 18th-century canalside mansions in Oud-Zuid and is within easy walking distance to the Rijksmuseum, Royal Palace, Museum Van Loon and trendy Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) shopping district.
Inside, Rococo elements meet timeless marble finishings and grand ceiling frescoes. There is an elevated atmosphere at the Waldorf Astoria and we’re here for it. There is a fully kitted gym, a Guerlain Spa and a large garden that would rival that of the Royal Palace’s.
We especially like the hotel's restaurant led by Sidney Schutte, Spectrum, which had a revamp a few years ago and boasts two Michelin stars. However, the hotel has several other formal and informal restaurants and bars dotted throughout too – each one as delicious as the next.

Best Amsterdam hotel for design lovers
Why we love it: This stylish luxury hotel occupies one of Amsterdam’s grandest 19th-century buildings and will make any design lover swoon. Picture sleek wooden interiors, plenty of glass and a large, sexy glass-enclosed lobby that intentionally reminds you of a conservatory. The lobby bar is one of the best spots in the city for a cocktail so you don’t have to go far for a good drink. Meanwhile, the all-day on-site restaurant The Brasserie is a great spot if you want a healthy meal.
The hotel is conveniently located near Museumplein, where art lovers can check out the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, MoCo Museum and of course the Rijksmuseum (where you can see the paintings of Rembrandt, Johaness Vermeer and Han Asselijn among other great Dutch artists). The hotel also has a subterranean indoor pool, spa and gym, perfect for relaxing after a long day of exploring the city. The rooms are spacious (some even have lofts) and have everything from free wifi to bougie Sennheiser headphones, dedicated in-room smartphones and espresso machines.

Why we love it: The Dylan, part of the Leading Hotels of the World, is located in the chic Negen Straatjes shopping area, and is walking distance to all of Jordaan’s cool galleries and cafes. The Dylan fits perfectly well with its fashionable district and combines a muted colour palette of greys, black and oak with contemporary décor. The vibe is understated cool – and the 40 rooms, though varying in size and spread across two canalside buildings, all exude the same elegance as the public spaces. The excellent Michelin-starred Vinkeles restaurant occupies a former bakery and is one of the best tables in the city. Led by Chef Dennis Kuipers, the menu takes diners on an incredible gastronomic journey that they won’t soon forget. While The Dylan doesn’t have a spa or pool (there is a small gym), it certainly makes up for the austere facilities with plenty of style and ambience. It is certainly one of the coolest hotels in the city.

Best for sustainable travellers
Why we love it: Located in leafy Westerpark and occupying a former gasworks, Conscious Hotel is our top sustainable hotel in Amsterdam. You can walk to the trendy shopping streets of Haarleemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat and to the Anne Frank house or take a quick tram to Museumplein. The hotel has laidback interiors that pay tribute to its past life as a gasworks. The Conscious Café offers great coffee, and light bites while the sustainable shop sells everything from salads to healthy wraps. The on-site Kantoor Bar and Restaurant offers excellent park views – and has some pretty delicious cocktails too. During Wine Hour – guests can enjoy free glasses of wine on the daily. Plus, the hotel has a Greenkey Gold Certificate – meaning that it minimises waste, has water-saving taps and showers and solar panels too. In the rooms, the Royal Dutch Auping Beds are cradle-to-cradle which means that nothing will go to waste. Conscious travellers will especially love that the Conscious Hotels Group has planted over 10,000 trees since 2018.

Why we love it: It’s rare to see skyscrapers in Amsterdam and so the 23-storey building that Hotel Okura occupies certainly stands out in the hip De Pijp neighbourhood. Hotel Okura brings a sense of Japanese design and aesthetics to Amsterdam with interiors that blend clean lines, neutral colour palettes and plenty of light. The Nagomi Spa is a haven of tranquillity and is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the city. There is also a light-filled gym complete with personal trainers and a cooking studio that offers fun cookery classes. Foodies will love the hotel’s many restaurants which together have four Michelin stars between them. We especially like the Japanese fine dining Yamazato restaurant and the Ciel Bleu restaurant on the 23rd floor. The spacious rooms are designed in a muted colour palette of beiges and greys and come with super king-sized beds and bathtubs. The higher rooms offer incredible panoramic views of Amsterdam.

Why we love it: Staying at the Seven Bridges Hotel is like staying in your kooky Dutch aunt’s house for the weekend, and it is a total vibe. The Seven Bridges Hotel occupies a 300 year-old canal house that is brimming with vibrant antiques including rich Persian rugs, baroque dressers and an eclectic collection of art. Like its name suggests, the hotel gives you a one-of-a-kind view of the Reguliersgracht’s seven bridges lining up. No two rooms are alike, but each one has plenty of charm. There is a very home-from-home feel at Seven Bridges and the owners will go out of their way to give you recommendations of the best places to eat and drink in the city. While there is no breakfast, spa nor gym – Seven Bridges’ location in Utrechtsestraat means it is surrounded by plenty of delightful cafes and brunch restaurants.

Best for natural sorroundings
Why we love it: After staying at Hotel Arena, we wonder why more hotels are not located within parks. For the ultimate unwind, book the top suite and hop into the circular bathtub on your private balcony to take in the stunning views of Oosterpark—it's pure bliss. The location of the hotel is beautiful, especially if you are lucky enough to be there on a warm weekend, making it perfect for morning, afternoon, or evening strolls. Despite the park often being full with crowds – people practising yoga, reading and having picnics, it somehow still feels peaceful. There are numerous chill-out spots scattered around the hotel (one with a fireplace for chilly nights) and an in-house art exhibition, so you can make the most of slowing down without getting bored. You can reach the city within 15 minutes, but also far enough to be removed from tourist chaos. When you are at Hotel Arena, you have an overwhelmingly calming feeling that it is exactly where you are meant to be.
