Style Trendsetters: AW12

From Kate Moss and Christina Hendricks via Barney the Big Purple Dinosaur and Mary Poppins, discover the people - however unlikely - that style-savvy girls will be channelling from now into the new year
Gregory SmithKristen Stewart as Marylou in On The Road
K-Stew’s had a stormy time of it recently, but credit where credit’s due – her portrayal of troubled wild-child Marylou in Walter Salles’ hotly-anticipated On The Road this autumn is a winner. You’ll see out the dregs of summer wanting to wear short-sleeved blouses, battered Converse and shades with Perspex frames; trust us.

GoRunwayJay Kay from Jamiroquai
The man himself once sang of futures made of virtual insanity... And what’s the world coming to when Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay, voice of the 90s, has a say in our wardrobes, too? It’s all Marc Jacobs’ fault. Top of your accessories wish-list this season should be an oversized hat, as created by Stephen Jones for the uber-designer’s fall line.

Carey Mulligan as Daisy in The Great Gatsby
Excitement for Baz Luhrmann’s Gatsby has been bubbling under for what seems like an age now, but it’s set to explode, in the manner of a Champagne magnum, all over the high street for autumn/winter 2012. Drop-waists, skull caps and costume jewellery all nod to 20s fever; this is one sartorial tune we’ll all be jiving to, trust us.

Go RunwayBarney the Big Purple Dinosaur
OK, not really. But purple is the colour to be seen in, so ensure that your wardrobe is acquainted with it, pronto. Raf Simons at Christian Dior used it as the base tone of one of the most covetable collections of the season.

PA PhotosThe New Bond Girls
With the release of Skyfall in October, signature Bond girl glamour should be firmly on everyone’s fashdars – which is no bad thing in the run up to the festive season. We’re already looking to new face Bérénice Marlohe’s off-set French elegance for party-time ideas.

Keira Knightley as Anna in Anna Karenina
Pile on the faux furs, ladies: staying snug has never looked so beautiful. Jacqueline Durran, who dressed Keira for the film, told us that she thought the Russian crossover to the catwalks was a “coincidence” – but, be that as it may, it’s a happy one. We particularly loved Temperley London’s take on it.

GoRunwayMary Poppins
If a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, a fabulous umbrella will surely make the inevitably wet months to come a little more bearable. Burberry’s finale put Ms Poppins’ favourite accessory firmly in the style spotlight. Follow her lead, and don’t leave home without one.

GoRunwayMadonna, circa Die Another Day
Military details are big news for autumn/winter 2012. It’s fair to say that the front row at Topshop Unique’s catwalk show were paying very close attention – sorry! – to the khaki greatcoats, stompy leather boots and patch-pocket shirts parading before them. Madge 2.0, eat your heart out.

Go RunwayValentino Garavani
No, we don’t expect you to mirror the designer’s wardrobe. Thanks to the retrospective of his inimitable couture career that Somerset House will be hosting from November, you’ll be too busy swooning over the archives of his own-name label, from which he retired in 2007. Wear red in his honour.

PA PhotosPosh ‘n’ Becks circa 1999
Leather is always a big story come the darker months, and this season is no exception. The rule? Head to toe will keep it looking contemporary (see Givenchy). Although we recommend you draw the line before you get to eleven on the dial – aka Posh and Becks in these delightful his ‘n’ hers bodysuits – for real-life wearability.

Rex FeaturesKate Moss
A few incredible campaigns aside (Ferragamo! OMG!), all’s been rather quiet on the Kate Moss front of late. But that’s all set to change with homage to the super’s 20-year career; the release of new coffee table tome Kate: The Kate Moss Book, edited by Jefferson Hack. You’ll be gravitating towards your skinny jeans and chewing your nails before you know it.

WennNaomi Watts as Diana, Princess Of Wales
With filming for the new Diana biopic, Caught In Flight, in full swing – and an utterly convincing Naomi Watts in the lead role – expect regal style with an 80s twist to start dominating fashion shoots soon. Helpfully, there are plenty of oversized silhouettes out there to get your teeth into.

GoRunwayMaison Martin Margiela
“What’s that jacket? Margiela?” is set to be the refrain of the streets in a few weeks’ time as H&M’s latest designer collaboration, with Maison Martin Margiela, hits the shop floors. Word has it, Martin’s no longer at the helm – but even when he was, he took pains to remain utterly anonymous. Let ‘quiet luxury’ and ‘discretion’ be your by-words.

PA PhotosChristina Hendricks as Joan Holloway in Mad Men, series 5
Die-hard Mad Men groupies are already counting down the days to 29 October, which is the official release date of series 5 on DVD. You’d think by now we’d’ve had enough of drooling over the costumes and trying to incorporate wiggle dresses, beehives and the New Look, into our own working wardrobes, right? Duh. Wrong.

FlynetThe Downton Debs
With the imminent and highly-anticipated arrival of Downton Abbey back on UK screens in September, we defy you not to tap into your girly side. While you may draw the line at head-to-toe period dress, a well-appointed bow or ruffle ne’er hurt anyone.

PA PhotosZara Philips
Whisper it: it’s not all about Kate Middleton when it comes to royal style statements. Indeed, the smart money is on Olympian Zara Phillips’ look to be winner this season: equestrian detailing was a big catwalk story for the likes of Gucci, Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren. Tally ho!

Rex FeaturesKatherine Hepburn
Nobody wore a trouser suit like Katherine Hepburn, but we can expect to see many an A-lister attempt to emulate her on the red carpets of autumn as the tailoring trend gains momentum. We’ve loved Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson and Camilla Belle’s recent takes on it.

GoRunwayMorticia Addams
Black is the new black. We intend to do this season’s gothic the Alberta Ferretti way, via two-tone textures, and with Gucci’s dark lip to finish. Irresistible.

GoRunwaySarah Lund
Hysteria over The Killing may well be behind us, but that’s not to say we’ll be leaving our Fair Isle knits in the woollens drawer come winter. Au contraire! Check out Emilio Pucci’s blinged up monochrome version for a 2012 update.

With a new book, movie and jewellery line (The Legacy Collection, courtesy of Atelier Swarovski) all being released in her honour, formidable editirix Diana Vreeland is having a ‘moment’. Of course, for fashion insiders, her influence is ever-present. “The only real elegance is in the mind; if you've got that, the rest really comes from it,” she famously said. It’s our new mantra.
