AW 2015 Trend Guide
Bored of your wardrobe? The new season is upon us and with it an assortment of trends for you to experiment with.
From the shoe we'll all be wearing (Mary-Janes) and the key colours (red and pink) to the era we'll be channelling (70s and 80s) and the style icon that will serve as inspiration (Margot Tenenbaum), we decode autumn/winter 2015's most influential trends and explain how to wear them:
IndigitalTHE COLOUR: Pink
As seen at: Prada, Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Miu Miu
How to wear: It’s a controversial colour is pink, but there was no doubting it as one of autumn’s most ubiquitous shades. It came in an array of variations – from pretty pastel shades to glittering magenta at Christopher Kane. It doesn’t have to be saccharine; if you’re not a girly girl, opt for a rich darker hue a la Kane.

How to wear: The Mary Jane has been revived and it’s no longer understated. Think jewels, glitter and chunky heels. They’re brilliantly easy to wear too – they don’t need to be toweringly high to look good. Go ladylike and wear yours with a beautiful dress a la Dolce & Gabbana (or Taylor Swift), make like Prada (pictured here) and team with a cropped trouser, or pare with a patent mini skirt for a bold look.

How to wear: This season’s stand-out colour was red. At Hermes (pictured here), Marni and Dior models wore it head-to-toe, demonstrating how to work this bold shade both day or night. Don’t be scared of it – a variation of red, crimson or burgundy suits everybody. If you don’t fancy going all red, embrace an accessory shade, whether a pair of velvet boots or red pout.

How to wear: Forget taste, the 80s revival is about dressing up and having fun. No, you won’t see many of French fashion editors embracing this style (theirs is a more stripped-back, effortless look); this trend is for those who are loud and desperate to experiment. Clash your prints, wear lashings of glitter, try a retro waist belt and play with ruffles and power shoulders. It’s a lot to get on board with, but quite the party once you’re there.

IndigitalTHE ERA: 70s
As seen at: Chloe, Burberry, Valentino, Lanvin
How to wear: Summer’s most prolific trend is staying for autumn/winter 2015, this time taking a more folky look. Forget pretty white dresses, imagine you’re working as a prairie girl out in the American sticks. The colour palette is richer and darker; embroidery is still big; and autumnal leaf prints and fringing are key. The AW folk dress is generally longer than its summer sister and worn with thick tights and suede boots. Layer it all up, whack on a waistcoat and a scarf over your floaty dress, but beware of going overboard.

IndigitalTHE MATERIAL: Latex and PVC

How to wear: Yes we know, not an easy one to get on board with and only the truly brave need apply. The admirably daring might be tempted by a PVC trench as seen on the Emilia Wickstead catwalk, while the rest of us will make do with a badass PU mini skirt or pair of high-shine tight ankle boots. Badass AND sexy.

How to wear: This most sumptuous of fabrics can be worn as a two-piece suit (think Mick Jagger in the 70s or Cara Delevingne), just as a jacket with jeans or opt for a pair of platform heels – perfect for when party season comes around.

IndigitalTHE NECKLINE: Funnel necks
As seen at: Topshop, Erdem, Peter Pilotto
How to wear: The higher the neckline the better for AW 2015. Bid V-necks farewell and welcome funnel and polo necks into your wardrobe. Wear as a dress, as a chunky knit or just invest in polo neck top to slip underneath your dungarees or folk dress when the cold sets in. Pussy bow blouses were big at Gucci, so get ready to see them dotted all over the high street – but think boho breezy, rather than prim and Thatcher-inspired.

IndigitalTHE TROUSER: Swing cropped flares

How to wear: It sounds disgusting we know, but channel your inner Francoise Hardy and see how you feel. These aren’t going to flatter everyone, but if you are up for tapping into this trouser trend this is how – wear with boots underneath for a retro vibe or with heels for a sleeker, elongated look. They should be roomy, but not oversized.

How to wear: Perhaps not a ubiquitous trend, but one we’ve already seen Topshop mimic and Alexa Chung tap into – the babydoll dress. We’re heartily on board with this one – it’s relatively easy to wear and looks great with flats as well as knee-high suede boots.

IndigitalTHE MOOD: Dark Victoriana
As seen at: Giles, Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, Givenchy and Rodarte
How to wear: So not everyone will have much cause to wear one of Giles’ dramatic dark gowns, but Victorian lace bib blouses and spray-on leather trousers are much easier to wear – though maybe not together as you might end up looking like a princess of darkness, which may or may not appeal to you. Dark berry lips and messy period drama hair were also big on the catwalks.

IndigitalTHE MOOD: Posh country
As seen at: Altuzarra, Sonia Rykiel, Dior, Erdem, Miu Miu and Prada
How to wear: By this we mean tweed, and not just at Chanel. Houndstooth, plaids and refined checks are making a comeback – and they’re far from dowdy. Opt for a pleated slit skirt as seen at Dior, a boucle mini or funk it up with bright accessories Miu Miu-style. Oversized tuxes look great when paired with little else – just a mini dress and knee-highs a la Georgia Jagger, pictured here.

What does it mean? For those who haven’t seen The Royal Tenenbaums, playwright Margot Tenenbaum wears a mix of boho vintage and sportswear – it’s an eclectic look that merges geekiness with attitude. Her staples are a faux fur coat, loafers and a tennis dress, maybe with a cardigan thrown in for good measure.
