For many of us, a trip to Victoria's Secret was the first time we really understood that underwear could be more than just a practical clothing item. Browsing the rails of pretty bras (and spritzing ourselves liberally with vanilla-scented body mists), we were able to see ourselves as independent, empowered and confident – and that's exactly the feeling the brand aims to capture in their new collection, Icon.
Over the last few years, Victoria's Secret has aimed to be a more inclusive and representative brand, casting more women of colour, plus-size models and trans women. It's a necessary and welcome change, and the Icon collection is the latest in the brand's efforts. The campaign features OG supermodels Naomi Campbell, Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen, Gen Z stars Adut Akech and Paloma Elsesser, queen of the lingerie-as-outerwear look Emily Ratajkowski and IT girl of the moment, Hailey Bieber – and they're all living proof that the line looks incredible.
The '90s inspired designs include chic push-up bras, thongs and briefs, sleek teddies, and strappy garter belts. Subtle details such as monogrammed lace and gold charms make these pieces look way more expensive than they really are: starting from £45 for the bras and £14 for the pants, these are relatively affordable compared to the pricey high-end lingerie you'd normally have to splash out on to get the same luxurious vibe. The range launched instore and online on 10th August, and is the perfect way to revamp your underwear drawer or experiment with a new style for summer.
But the collection doesn't just look good – it's backed by some serious science. Inspired by the fact that not everyone's boobs are the same shape (and of course, shouldn't have to be), Victoria's Secret developed the custom-lift technology used on the Icon's push-up demi bra, which is available in sizes 30B-44D. This new design gently lifts and supports without pressing your breasts together or pushing them up and out, and the technology is adjusted to your cup size to provide maximum comfort. The straps can also be lengthened or shortened for an even better fit. It goes without saying that no one ever needs to wear a push-up bra, but if you choose to do so, this is a piece that works with your individual shape rather than against it – which is exactly the kind of body positivity we're looking for.
We're also obsessed with the wide colour range, which is intended to work with a variety of different skin tones. You'll be able to pick up the push-up demi monogram bra and its matching pants in everything from a selection of neutral tones destined to become your new everyday favourites to a vibrant lilac that'll make the most amazing statement piece. And if you're loving the current trend for all things Barbiecore as much as we are, the bright fuchsia pink set should definitely be in your basket.
It's a common misconception that lingerie is designed solely to appeal to a partner, and while that's a totally valid motive to click the purchase button on any (or all) of the pieces from the Icon range, it's far from the only one. This collection celebrates all the reasons behind why we choose to wear lingerie, whether it's to liven up an outfit or as a self-confidence boost. Its stylish and supportive designs encourage us to embrace our unique beauty and think of ourselves as strong, powerful and sexy icons in our own right.
