The pressure to build an epic list of new year’s resolutions for January 1st that will *immediately* change your life remains strong… but as 2022 begins, we’re bringing it back to basics and suggest you do the same. Start by being kinder to yourself and the environment. Carve out time for essential self-care and seeing friends who truly make you happy. Only make positive purchases, whether you’re working on your own wardrobe updates or planning to #GiftWhatsGood for celebrations throughout the year. If living a more sustainable life is high up on your gift of #goals for 2022 (it’s number one on ours) when it comes to fashion, one of the best changes you can make is to always check the label on potential purchases.

We know… After the sparkly festivities of Christmas and New Year’s Eve are over and the baubles packed away, January can feel like a loooooong month. Treating yourself - or your friends - to a little retail therapy often seems like a winning way to lift the fog. But if you’re considering a fashion fix, don’t succumb to buying something you’ll regret. Loved clothes last. A considered purchase will always stay the course. At the moment fashion is playing a major part in rising global temperatures - statistics place it as one of the most impactful industries on the planet - but there are ways to lessen the climatic consequences of your clothes.

Making sure you wear your clothes at least thirty times significantly cuts the carbon footprint of your purchases as does washing garments at low temperatures. When they do reach the end of their life cycle, donate or recycle old clothes with consideration. Choosing sustainable fabrics is a major step to cut down on your fashion choices’ impact on the planet too, so checking the label before you checkout is essential.

Knowing what your clothes are made from is an empowering way to help us all reach those essential climate change goals. It’s an unescapable fact that the two biggest fabrics currently used in the textile business (cotton and polyester) are also the biggest polluters during their production and afterlife… That’s the reason you need to know about TENCEL™.

TENCEL™ is a premium textile brand that creates soft fibres that are used to make fabric. All the fibres come from renewable and sustainably managed wood sources (that have all achieved PEFC status - Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification - and FSC - Forest Stewardship Council - approval.) This transforms the wood into wood pulp which creates super soft fibres. As well as this sustainable starting point, TENCEL™ branded cellulosic fibres, including TENCEL™ Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell, are also available in an eco-responsible “reduce-engage-offset” production method. Both TENCEL™ Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell are available as certified CarbonNeutral® products and any byproducts from the production process are made into bio-fuels to power heat and electricity.  TENCEL™ Lyocell have adopted a closed loop process where any solvents used are captured and reused. As consumers, we need to push the brands we shop with to offer more transparency in their sourcing, so we can make considered decisions about our future buys. TENCEL™ offers a clear process so you can shop knowing all the facts.

The Lenzing Group (the TENCEL™ parent company) has been working on their wood-based fibre creations since 1970, so they have the knowledge and experience to create a fully conscious product. We’re here for their clever environmentally-responsible processes and it’s a weight off our minds to know that at the end of your garment’s life, TENCEL™ branded fibres are also 100% compostable and biodegradable! So far, so sustainable.

TENCEL™ is widely available, too. With collaborations with household names like Ugg and Mother of Pearl, spotting TENCEL™ on the care label isn’t too tough a task. Mother of Pearl is one of the longest-standing sustainable luxury brands, mixing responsible practises with the most desirable styles and Ugg’s casual, comfortable remit have made icons of their footwear. You can also find TENCEL™ in the current collections from Tree Napper (their cooling, weighted blankets are a serious update to your sleep routine), Stripe & Stare (who make the softest knickers you will ever wear), Odd Molly (head there for wardrobe staples) and Megosa (no-compromise loungewear that’s cool enough to wear Out Out.)
