You season 5 is approaching – and Netflix have just dropped the official trailer. We. Know.
In it, we see Joe returning to New York in the hopes of enjoying his happily ever after – but ghosts from his past are back to haunt him. It opens with the, now infamous, words: “Hello you."
Joe then continues: "You're back, in the greatest city in the world thanks to the one person who could make it possible", alluding to his new wife Kate. "Fame definitely took a bit of getting used to. But to live happily ever after you had to bury your old self."
The official synopsis reads: "In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after… until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires."
We cannot wait, and we're not the only ones. “This seasons REALLY raising the stakes,” one fan commented under the YouTube video, while another added: “This is gonna be the best season yet!”
Of course, those of us who have watched the teaser will already know that Joe is in New York, as the clip shows us Joe getting ready for an evening out with his girlfriend, Kate. It seems the pair are now living “happily”, just as they had planned at the end of season 4.
“Love tests us,” drones Joe's familiar voiceover. He goes on: “I've been tested more than most. This is the last time. I came from nothing. A true rags-to-riches story. I've been through it all. Unlucky in life and in love until I met you.”
This trailer comes after the news that Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau will be joining the cast next season.
After making history as the first transgender actress to be recognised at the Emmys in the supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category, the Teri actor will join Penn Badgley in what will be the final season of You.
This feels very exciting, especially as Nava was candid in an interview with GLAMOUR earlier this year about the lack of acting roles for trans people in the industry right now.
“Right now, the industry seems to be afraid of taking risks,” she said. "We have seen time and time again that trans people on screen can be superheroes, can be the love interest, can be the villain, can be hilarious and comforting.
“The entire spectrum of what is possible on screen is also possible for trans people. So I don't know what people are afraid of, to be honest.”
She related ‘deeply’ to her character.

After disappearing to London and assuming a new identity in 2022's season 4, it also looks like Joe is heading back to the US for season 5.
In an image released by Netflix earlier this year, Joe is shown strutting through the streets of New York City. “Spotted: Joe Goldberg in New York City. The 5th and final season of YOU is now in production,” reads the caption in a sly little nod to Gossip Girl, the early 2000s classic that also saw Penn Badgley taking on NYC.

You season 5 cast
Joining Nava and Joe will be Charlotte Ritchie as Kate, Griffin Matthews as Kate's brother, Anna Camp will play Kate's identical twin sisters, Natasha Benham, b, Pete Ploszek, Tom Francis and Madeline Brewer.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega also could be coming back to play Ellie Alves, a friend and foe to Penn Badgley's Joe Goldberg back in You's second season. Netflix's TUDUM event gave us a tantalising teaser for You's season five, with Penn hinting at the show's “epic conclusion” and confirming that it will take place in New York once more.
He talks about who Joe's latest “You” – or nemesis – could be, and we get a flash of some potentials, including Tati Gabrielle's Marienne, Tilly Keeper's Lady Phoebe, Amy-Leigh Hickman's Nadia and Ellie Alves herself. Could Jenna Ortega be coming back to the show for its big finish?
You season 5 trailers
Netflix have now dropped the official trailer:
We have had a drip feed of info into the new season for a while now though, with two teaser trailers having previously been released.
The first teaser showed Badgley chatting about season 5 alongside clips from the previous seasons:
The second teaser gave us our first real look at the new season:
Is this the final season of You?
The news confirming season 5 of You was announced earlier this year via the official You Twitter page, as the account tweeted: “Goodbye... YOU. Joe Goldberg will return for the fifth and final season of YOU in 2024.”
Unsurprisingly, the tweet was met with a torrent of sad, angry and downright disappointed reactions from fans. “Whyyyyy? Just whyyyy?” wrote one, while another added: “i’m crying literally like literal tears are building up in my eyes.”

In fairness, there were hints. Like when Penn Badgley discussed it on an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying: “I think if there's another season, I think it's only going to be one. I think — this is my understanding, but I don't know, I really don't know.
“But I know that everybody concerned, from the top on down, nobody wants this show to become tired. That's when Joe is the most disgusting. That's when the show stops having the intelligence that it has.”
Or when he told IndieWire: “It feels to me like we need to do another season. It feels to me like Joe needs to get what’s coming to him, and now he has further to fall because he has all this power and wealth," adding later on in the interview: "I know the creators of the show always had this next season in mind as its last, should there be another one. And then it will probably be a spectacular resolution because it feels to me like something is in the works by the very end of this season.”
Let's remember though, it's not over ‘til it’s over. And so, with that in mind, here's everything we know about You Season 5.
Is there a You season 5 release date yet?
Yes! Mark those calendars because season 5 lands on 24th April 2025.
What can we expect from the You season 5 plot?
According to Netflix's TUDUM, Joe will “return to New York City with his wealthy partner Kate and a dangerous new lease on life — a life he’s finally admitted is fundamentally immoral”. Crucially, Joe's acceptance of this immoral behaviour is something that Penn Badgley is excited about exploring.
We also have additional clues in the form of an interview with Sera Gamble, a showrunner for You.
"We have an idea for season five that we’re excited about," she revealed in a podcast interview with the Hollywood Reporter's show, TV's Top 5, adding "It was never anyone’s intention to run this one into the ground. When we’re done, we’ll be done."
Sera also opens up about the forthcoming season's location, adding: “You’ll know what the next season would be when you see the end of this season. We tell you what the idea is.”
“In the world we live in, we must trust our gut instincts.”

Where will the new series be set?
Given that main character Joe – played by Penn Badgley – and his girlfriend Kate – Charlotte Ritchie – return to New York at the end of season 4 (which is set in London), the future season location also seems to be confirmed.
“It feels to me like we need to do another season.
So there's that, at least, even if the hit series is potentially nearing a finish line after that point.
You seasons 1-4 are available to watch on Netflix.
