Why Malaga is your unexpected wellness destination this summer

The restorative side of the Costa del Sol.

There are two kinds of luxury hotels on the Costa del Sol. The first are the polished but predictable beach resorts lined up along the promenade, where breakfast buffets blur into rooftop DJ sets and every infinity pool looks suspiciously identical on Instagram. Then there’s Higuerón Hotel Málaga, Curio Collection by Hilton, a sleek hillside retreat that feels more like a wellness club for stylish grown-ups than a conventional fly-and-flop holiday hotel.

Perched above Fuengirola with cinematic Mediterranean views, Higuerón has quietly become one of southern Spain’s most talked-about luxury escapes for those who want more from a holiday than sangria by the pool. Think reformer Pilates at sunrise, sushi lunches, spa circuits, rooftop cocktails and just enough glamour to make you feel like the main character for a long weekend.

First impressions matter here, and Higuerón understands aesthetics. The architecture is ultra-modern with clean lines, pale stone, giant windows and a gallery-like atmosphere thanks to its installations, minimalist styling and dramatic open-plan design. It’s the sort of hotel where everyone seems effortlessly bronzed and permanently dressed in elevated neutrals.

The rooms continue the same vibe, calm, airy, simple and chic without feeling try-hard. Expect oversized beds, floor-to-ceiling windows, neutral palettes and balconies overlooking either the sea or the mountains. Some suites even come with outdoor Jacuzzis and Balinese beds for peak quiet luxury energy.

Higuerón is heaven for wellness girlies. Not in a hardcore bootcamp way, but in a “matcha after yoga followed by champagne at sunset” kind of way. The resort’s sports club is genuinely impressive, with high-performance gym facilities, tennis and padel courts, fitness classes and one of the best-equipped hotel wellness spaces I have ever seen.

The spa itself is equally as impressive, vaulted ceilings, hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms, sauna circuits and treatment rooms designed to make you temporarily forget your inbox exists. The 60 minute relaxation massage more than lives up to its name and was the perfect way to begin a long weekend of much needed rest.

And then there’s the rooftop infinity pool.

Suspended above the coastline with panoramic sea views, chic loungers and a distinctly adults-only atmosphere, it feels glamorous without tipping into Ibiza-style chaos. There is a relaxed energy with house music playing softly in the background, cocktails arriving on cue and a crowd that skews more fashion-editor-on-holiday than lads-on-tour.

Food-wise, Higuerón delivers more than the average resort buffet situation. The standout is undoubtedly Sollo Restaurante, the Michelin-starred restaurant led by chef Diego Gallegos, known for inventive tasting menus focused on river fish and sustainability. It’s a genuine destination restaurant rather than a token “fine dining” hotel add-on.

Elsewhere, there’s sushi, Mediterranean dining, rooftop cocktails and generous breakfasts combining Spanish specialities like Churros served with a decadent chocolate sauce alongside all the usual classics, fresh fruit, smoothies, pastries, eggs-to-order and enough healthy options to convince yourself you’re being balanced before ordering poolside rosé at noon.

Although only a short 30 minute transfer from Malaga airport, if you’re imagining stepping out directly onto a beach promenade lined with tapas bars, this is not that hotel. One of the most appealing parts of Higuerón for a relaxing long weekend is how secluded it feels. It’s peaceful, quiet and removed from tourist chaos. Although if you do start to get itchy feet the hotel does provide a shuttle service down to the beach, where they have their own private beach club, with direct access to the sea and sand alongside a private pool and restaurant, perfect for a relaxed lunch when the midday heat gets a little too intense.

If you’re looking for somewhere stylish enough for content, relaxing enough to genuinely decompress and luxurious without the intensity of somewhere like Marbella, Higuerón hits a sweet spot. There’s glamour here, but it’s understated. More quiet luxury than flashy influencer circus.

Ultimately, Higuerón feels like the hotel equivalent of a perfectly curated capsule wardrobe: modern, polished, aspirational and designed for those who want their holidays to feel restorative and aesthetically pleasing.

Prices range from 250 euros for a standard room to approximately 600 euros for suites.
