The White Lotus is back — and it's as wild and wonderful as ever. Mike White's beloved satirical show follows a predictable, winning formula — a group of wealthy (primarily white) Americans descend upon a luxurious exotic resort. Their seemingly tidy “perfect” lives begin to unravel, ultimately, leading to a shocking tragedy.
Following the first season's visit to Hawaii and the second's trip to Sicily, season 3 sets the scene against the backdrop of a luscious, verdant island in Thailand. As a moneyed family from the American south, a group of middle-aged female friends (or frenemies) and an incongruous May December couple settle into the gorgeous hotel, the natural world seems closer than ever before in the show's history. Monkeys sit in trees just inches from their hotel windows. Just beyond the resort's infinity pools, the wild ocean laps at the shore. Ancient looking lizards scurry across the hotel grounds.
It gives a steady feeling of unsettling foreshadowing for the coming clash between the wealthy westerns and the natural world that surrounds them — but it's also, undeniably, stunning.
Sure, The White Lotus may be designed to criticise the carelessness of western travellers — but it's hard to shake the fact that the White Lotus hotels look so, so nice… and we kind of want to visit them.

Where is The White Lotus filmed?
Like the previous two seasons, The White Lotus set up camp at a luxurious Four Seasons hotel. This time, the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui in Thailand served as the main hotel.
The gorgeous hotel located on the shores of Koh Samui, an island in Thailand, is just as beautiful as it looks in the show. It features luxurious infinity pools that overlook the ocean, sprawling family villas with private living areas and balconies that look out over the jungle terrain of the island below.
The hotel also includes a fully equipped spa where guests can indulge in massages, scrubs, Reiki healing, sound therapy and more. In other words, everything we see in the HBO show.
As you might expect, the hotel isn't exactly appropriate for travellers on a budget. The cheapest prices you'll find for the hotel's villas and suites start at around £840 per night.
The cast of the show actually lived at the hotel while filming. “We moved location several times for filming, most of which was done at the Four Seasons,” actor Jason Isaacs told the Evening Standard. “Each of us stayed in these surreally, absurdly luxurious villas for billionaires, because that’s where our characters would have stayed.”
The new series has dropped with a whole new slew of incredible actors.

He added, “I didn’t enjoy staying in a villa. Those at the Four Seasons were huge and came with a butler. Each had its own pool – and I mean a proper swimming pool, not just the little dippy ones. The whole thing made me feel deeply uncomfortable and quite lonely – like I was in a gilded cage. I much preferred the smaller hotels where all we had was a bedroom.”
Meanwhile, actor Shalini Peiris told Tatler, “The nutty thing is that you're living the White Lotus experience while you're filming The White Lotus… It was like an incredibly privileged summer camp.”

This season of The White Lotus also takes us outside of the boundaries of the hotel as we travel to Phuket and Bangkok.
Thank you, Mike White, for a lesson in how not to behave with your girlfriends.
