Daniel Radcliffe leaves his little round glasses behind him as Arthur Kipps in Jane Goldman's adaptation of The Woman In Black. A widowed lawyer with a young son, at first we found it hard to believe that Radcliffe, having just graduated Hogwarts, would have the maturity to pull off such a role: but he's more than impressive out of his comfort zone, carrying a film in which there isn't a scene without him.

The story is so well-known that there are few who will not feel a little annoyance as Kipps commits himself blindly to a night alone in an obviously-haunted house: but the reworked ending and long, misty, beautifully-framed shots are enough to keep us more than entertained. The Lady herself is not as terrifying as we hoped: but be prepared for a few look-behind-you jumps throughout. An enjoyable gothic-horror: take company to the cinema so you'll have somebody to cling to.
