The Wives recap

The show has certainly taken us through some serious ups and downs over the course of its six episodes. A lot has happened. The basic overview is this: Beth, Natasha and Sylvie, all sisters-in-law in the Morgan family, decide to get to the bottom of the disappearance of their fourth sister-in-law, Annabelle, who went missing during the family's annual summer trip to Malta last year. Annabelle left behind her husband Charlie and daughter Sky. Although Annabelle was initially presumed dead, Charlie's new girlfriend raises some suspicions with the three sisters-in-law.

What really happened to Annabelle?

It turns out, Annabelle didn't fall from the cliffs of Malta to her death. Instead, she had faked her death last year and gone into hiding. In the final episode we find out why.

It turns out, local Luca (Louis Boyer), who had been having an affair with Sylvie, had been paid by someone to kill Annabelle. Annabelle found out about the plot, paid him off, and faked her death. Luca then threatened to kill Annabelle's daughter, Sky, if she ever came forward with the story. Over the course of the series, Annabelle had been in contact with Sky under the online pseudonym OceanMagic22.

Annabelle reappeared in the sisters' lives when they attempted to lure ‘OceanMagic22’ out into the open. Luca tracked them to the meeting spot and pulled out a gun, but Annabelle came to the rescue, hitting Luca with a van.

Who paid to have Annabelle killed?

After reuniting with her sisters-in-law, Annabelle explained that the plot had all been arranged by her husband, Charlie. Why? Apparently, Annabelle had tried to leave Charlie, but he didn't want to lose her — or, more importantly, her money.

At least, that's what Annabelle told her sisters. At the very end of the series, it turned out that Annabelle might have been mistaken… or, that she might not have been telling the truth.

Who was Sky's father?

Well, not Charlie, as she and everyone else believed. It turns out, Annabelle had actually had an affair with Frankie, her husband's brother and Beth's husband, and he had fathered Sky.

A twist ending

After telling the sisters her version of events, the police and the sisters tracked Charlie to a port in Malta where he was attempting to escape along with Sky and his new girlfriend, Jade. The police intercepted him and, as the series ends, Charlie is seen stuck in prison for his crime.

However, the ending of the show reveals that Charlie might actually be just as innocent as he claims to be. In the final moments, we see Frankie visit Charlie in jail. Playing nice, he convinces Charlie to hand over the business to him, before suddenly becoming rather sinister. We then see Frankie visiting Luca and handing over a load of cash, asking him to "finish the job he paid him to do a year ago." In other words, it was Frankie, not Charlie, who hired the hitman on Annabelle. Yes, on Annabelle, the woman he had once had an affair with and who had his child. The Morgans are a pretty messy bunch.

We still have a lot of unanswered questions

Although Channel 5 have yet to give the green light on a second season of the series, the season one finale certainly left us with plenty of questions.

Why did Frankie put out a hit on Annabelle? Will Frankie ever be caught? Will Luca try to kill Annabelle again? Here's hoping it all goes down when the Morgans return to Malta next summer.
