The Pitt season 2 is finally here.

The return of the heart-palpitating medical drama was confirmed just one month after audiences were introduced to ER doctor Michael “Robby” Rabinovitch (played by ER alum Noah Wyle) in season 1, as well as a less-than-merry band of overworked medical professionals at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre. And now it's dropping weekly on HBO Max.

“It’s been a thrill to watch audiences embrace The Pitt as an update to procedural storytelling with a cast who authentically embody the heroics of doctors and nurses on shift in a 2025 emergency room,” the head of Max Original Programming, Sarah Aubrey, said in a statement announcing the second season.

What do we know about the next season of The Pitt so far? Way more than we know about season 4 of The White Lotus, that’s for sure.

Here’s all the details we know about The Pitt season 2, including an ominous message about future plot lines, hints about the cast and characters, plus an honest-to-God premiere month.

When will The Pitt season 2 take place?

Executive producer R. Scott Gemmill recently revealed a time jump during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders TV event in April.

Season two jumps forward 10 months to the 4th of July, and Robby is preparing to go on a three-month sabbatical. We also know that as he's meeting the doctor who is due to be taking over for him in his absence, a cyber shutdown changes everything, forcing him and his team to rethink how they work and adapt to AI.

He continued, “I think we’re very much about authenticity, and some characters are more likely to leave than others based on where they are in their medical profession. No one yet. But on the show, we may have to see people leave just to keep it authentic because they wouldn’t necessarily be sticking around.”

Wells added, “And people work different shifts. Not all the shifts are 7 pm to 7 am. Just ’cause you don’t see someone in the first episodes doesn’t mean they’re not working.”

The Pitt season 2 plot

In his interview with Variety, Wyle said Dr. Robby will “no longer [be] able to pretend to himself that he doesn’t need help.”

As for what will befall patients at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre, Gemmill gave CNN a pretty ominous hint. “We had an expert today just to talk about changes in the availability of health care and how that’s gonna affect people, especially people of colour with diabetes,” he said in April. “And, basically, if you think there’s a health crisis now, if things keep going, it’s going to be just as bad, if not worse. It’s very disheartening, and so we try and do our best to bring that to the audience’s attention.”

But nothing is set in stone, with Wells adding that they speak to “at least three or four separate subject experts” on any given week.

The Pitt season 3

Shooting for the next season is reportedly due to start in June and be set in November over the Thanksgiving period.

"The thesis of season 1 is the doctor is the patient. Season 2, doctors don’t make very good patients. Season 3, doctors benefit from being patients,” Wyle has said.

There is also going to be a four-month time jump between seasons 2 and 3. Gemmill said in an interview with TV Line: "We're only going to do a four-month jump. We'll start in November. That serves a lot of purposes for us. It gives us some cold-weather scenarios, but also allows us to keep people a little longer who would normally be moving on, if we want.

“Sometimes those big jumps aren't always ideal. There's a lot of information you have to catch up on, so this way it's less of a dump.”
