The Girlfriend is a Thriller, with a capital T — and its dramatic conclusion proves it. The Girlfriend ending left us with our jaws on the floor and our eyes watering from how wide they were. Because it was Thrilling.

Of course, the six part miniseries from Prime Video had us hooked from the very beginning. The story of a man, his girlfriend and his unwelcoming mother, the show was a whirlwind of manipulation, game-playing and divided loyalties. And the best part? It never really told us who to trust. Told from both of their perspectives, that's something we had to figure out for ourselves.

“I think that's the beauty of the perspectives. Our characters can't be one thing,” Olivia Cooke told us. “They're incredibly nuanced people that have great, great flaws, but great capacity for love and generosity as well.” Added Robin Wright, “In a different world, they would've been BFFs…”

But not in this world. And in this world, the final episode makes all of that multiple perspective uncertainty a little more clear. So how does The Girlfriend end and vitally, who dies? Here's what to know about The Girlfriend ending.

What happens in The Girlfriend?

Based on the novel by Michelle Frances, the show opens with Daniel (Laurie Davidson) introducing his new girlfriend Cherry (Olivia Cooke) to his wealthy gallery owner mother Laura (Robin Wright). The two women don't exactly take a liking to each other.

Laura staunchly believes that Cherry is a social climber trying to weasel her way into their lives. Meanwhile, Cherry is weirded out by her boyfriend's ultra close relationship with his mum.

There's a lot of mother-of-bride stuff, with Laura pouring gravy on Cherry's dress and a potential cat defenestration.

Things get more serious when Laura fakes her own son's death, telling Cherry he died rock climbing. When Daniel and Cherry find their way back to each other, he, kind of understandably, cuts his mother off and proposes.

Cherry is still a contender for “most nuts” because she ten sets Laura's art gallery on fire. Laura ends up drugging Daniel to keep him away from Cherry — but Cherry arrives on the scene, setting us up for the final showdown.

How does The Girlfriend end?

The two women have a standoff that soon becomes violent. Daniel wakes up to find his mother and his girlfriend struggling in the water. He jumps in to save his fiancée and holds his mother under the water. Because he's still kind of out of it, it seems like he doesn't quite realise how long she's been under until, too late, she's dead.

Sad, but it did seem like Laura was kind of the villain here after the fake death and the drugging. So Cherry and Daniel get hitched.

We fast forward one year and the couple seem blissfully happy.

However, one day, Daniel spots his mother's cat trying to reach something behind a cabinet. It is, it turns out, Laura's phone, which had fallen out of sight during her fight with Cherry a year ago.

And guess what? It's filled with some pretty damning evidence.

Yes, the phone contains a video that Laura recorded while speaking to Cherry's mum, Tracey.

“When she has her sights set on something, you better not interfere or God help you,” says Tracey. “As you've seen for yourself, Laura, she'll glass herself in the face just to win – but believe me, she's done worse.”

She adds, "You tell your son: Don't be fooled by the good times because sooner or later she'll want something from you that you're not prepared to give and then, well... she'll find a way to get rid of you."

Duh duh duhhhh.

So, maybe Daniel shouldn't have killed his mum. And maybe he shouldn't have married Cherry. And maybe, he'll be her next victim if he tries to leave her.

We'll have to wait and see if there's a season 2 to find out what happens next.
