Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci historically has a knack for creating items that spark instant desire. Remember the Bambi jumper that sold out in hours? Or the men's Rottweiler T-shirt worn by everyone from Kanye West and Rihanna to Liv Tyler and Eva Mendes?
For spring/summer 2016, Tisci decrees that we'll be coveting slip dresses and we're inclined to believe him. Over in New York, the fashion press are already all over it, with many a fashion editor going for their easy, simple appeal.
We've loved slip dresses ever since we became smart enough to appreciate the glory days of Kate Moss for Calvin Klein; the dishevelled 90s grunge of Courtney Love and Winona Ryder; and the elegant simplicity of Cher from<span class="apple-converted-space"> Clueless' little white dress - now so iconic that Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa reissued it a few years ago.
The slip dress was one of the first examples of underwear-as-outerwear. Typically bias-cut with spaghetti straps and often with lace trim, it is a perfect mix of daring, effortless and sexy - see above Kate Moss in her shimmering version. It looks great teamed with a leather jacket or parka, with heels, trainers or a chunky flat boot. For AW, layer it up with a long-sleeved merino top, tights and boots.
For next season, it's imbued with a pretty, grungy feel. Mess up your hair, smudge your eyeliner and you're good to go. Mr Tisci, we salute you once again.
