I don't know a single person who doesn't picture Shay Mitchell with long, dark brown hair when she comes up in conversation. It's been her signature look for years. But because of that go-to style, I often think she doesn't get enough credit for being one of our generation's most prolific beauty chameleons. In just 2023 alone, we've seen her with bangs and a bob, loose Barbie-blonde waves, and more. But I had forgotten just how drop-dead gorgeous she looks with auburn hair until her stylist so conveniently reminded me today.
Dimitris Giannetos shared a stunning photo of the actor and entrepreneur on Tuesday, 12 December, writing, “New COWBOY COPPER hair color [sic] for stunning @shaymitchell.” Cowboy copper is one of the biggest trends right now, thanks to its warm, golden-brown take on auburn that makes red feasible and flattering on anyone — and fabulous on Shay Mitchell.
“I wanted to create the iconic cowboy copper color because it highlights Shay’s features and makes her eyes pop so beautifully,” Giannetos told us, noting that he used L'Oreal Paris Superior Preference in the shade 6R. As for styling the look, “I used Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo to give some extra texture," he explains. “I finished by using the Dyson Airwrap styler to create some gorgeous and fluffy waves.”

From what we can tell, this new hair colour is a wig; she wore this and several other non-copper looks for Byrdie's new Holiday Issue digital cover story. But it's not crazy to think she might have actually coloured her own hair considering she dyed it almost this exact colour in September 2022. And if she can see herself in this wig and not want to commit to this colour again, she is stronger in the face of temptation than I am.
