Yesterday Emma Rice, the new artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe theatre, announced that she would like to have a "50-50 split" between roles for actors and actresses at the theatre.

Traditionally female roles are largely in the minority in Shakespeare's work so this marks a really exciting turn for the company.

Rice, who has begun her first term as director, said that it will take a while, and performances won't be based on quotas, but that she sees no problem casting women in men's roles.

We're excited about this move and can't wait to see how the company will evolve under her new vision. Because, in the words of Rice herself, "if there's anyone who can bend gender, it's Shakespeare".
