Selena Gomez slipped in an effortless childless cat lady joke at Emmys 2024, just a few days after her best friend Taylor Swift signed a Kamala Harris presidential endorsement with JD Vance's now infamous phrase.

At the Emmys, which were held on Sunday, Sept. 15 in Los Angeles, Gomez was joined by her Only Murders in the Building costars Steve Martin and Martin Short to present the first award of the night, for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. If you've been watching the series, which is nominated for a whopping 21 Emmys this year, you'll know these three have banter and chemistry for days — it was on full display at the ceremony.

“What a magical evening it's been trying to remember people's names,” Gomez began. Short added, “and pretending we've seen their shows.” And Martin finished, “And when I see an actor I don't know I just say, 'I loved your scene with Nicole Kidman',' and nine times out of 10 I'm right.”

Martin and short exchanged their typical roasts: “Steve, let me just say what an honour it is for me to be working with someone who looks like he's fallen and can't get up.” “And let me say what an honour it is for me to be working with someone who looks like a former women's tennis champion.”

But then Gomez got in one of her own: “And let me say what an honour it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.”

The joke, of course, references vice presidential nominee JD Vance's now widely-mocked words. “We’re effectively run in this country, be it the Democrats, be it our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too," he told Tucker Carlson in 2021.

Democrats and Kamala Harris supporters have since reclaimed the phrase, most famously last week when Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, writing, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.” She signed her missive, “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”

No insult at all to Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who kicked off their Emmys hosting gig with a wholesome and funny father/son monologue, but we'd definitely be interested an Emmys hosted by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez.
