Running Point may have only just arrived on Netflix, though we can't help but find ourselves wondering when we might be getting Running Point season 2.
Now that my only two basketball puns are out of the way, let's talk about Kate Hudson's new comedy series loosely inspired inspired by real-life owner and CEO of the LA Lakers, Jeanie Buss. In the series co-created by Mindy Kaling, Hudson plays a fictional NBA nepo baby that takes over as president of the Los Angeles Waves after one of her brothers gets into an accident while high on drugs.
Think Succession meets Ted Lasso and you should have a pretty good idea what your in for—though you should probably go and watch the show before you read any further.
By the end of its first season, Isla Gordon (Hudson) has brought her NBA team all the way to the playoffs only to lose in game seven. In the final scene, Gordon returns to her office to find Cam (played by Justin Theroux) out of rehab and sitting in her chair. See what I said about Succession? “I'm back,” he tells her, ominously. If that sounds like the perfect layup for season two, Hudson and Kaling agree.
"I had so much fun doing this. I just want to keep doing it," Hudson told Entertainment Tonight. In the same interview, Kaling sent a personal message for Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, saying, "We love making the show, if you want to just pick us up for five more seasons."
Okay, now that I'm really out of basketball puns, here's what we know—and want to know about Running Point season 2.
When will Running Point season 2 premiere?
Well, given Running Point season 2 is yet to be confirmed, we don't have an answer for this one just yet.
The show's first season premiered on February 27, so our best guess would be Spring 2026, though Netflix is notorious for long off-seasons.
What would be the plot of season 2?
Obviously there will be some sort of power-play between Isla and Cam, though the Waves president is also dealing with some uncertainty in her love life.
While her ex-fiancé Lev Levenson (Max Greenfield) has moved out of their apartment and didn't show up for the team's big playoff game, Isla doesn't seem fully ready to stop fighting for the relationship. Of course, that doesn't stop her from kissing Coach Jay (Jay Ellis) on the empty court. Surely, that drama will continue to play out in season two if Greenfield and Ellis sign back on.
What will the Running Point season 2 cast look like?
Nothing has been announced, though it seems likely Hudson and Theroux would both return, as well as the rest of the main cast. Frankly, it's hard to imagine the show without Brenda Song (Ali Lee), Drew Tarver (Sandy Gordon), Scott MacArthur (Ness Gordon), Drew Tarver (Sandy Gordon), Fabrizio Guido (Jackie Moreno), and Scott Evans (Charlie).
Of course, the show would be nothing without its Waves players, including Toby Sandeman (Marcus Winfield), Dane DiLiegro (Badrag), and Uche Agada (Dyson).
Right now, the biggest wildcards are Greenfield and Ellis. While Lev is moving to Minneapolis, Coach Jay was planning a cross-country move of his own before his kiss with Isla, putting both actors' futures on the show in limbo.
Then there's Chet Hanks' Travis Bugg, a Waves player who gets sent to rehab ahead of the big game. "I have no idea [what’s going to happen to Travis in a potential second season], but I’d like to see a love interest, maybe a toxic relationship, some baby mama drama," Hanks told Tudum. “Hopefully he cleans up his act. Hopefully [he] learns his lesson.”
Who else might join the cast of The Running Point season 2?
Also unclear, but the cast is already stacked with talented Hollywood nepo babies and siblings, from Kate Hudson (daughter of Goldie Hawn) to Scott Evans (brother of Chris Evans) and Chet Hanks (son of Tom Hanks). What would be the harm in adding one more…let's say, Oliver Hudson?
Kate Hudson recently told People that her brother was "still mad he's not in the show," to which Kaling promised, he "will be" someday.
Hudson joked he'd be willing to pay a "dead body," telling Kaling, “He would love it.”
