Well known for its rich religious heritage and serene spiritual atmosphere, this island holds a significant place in history as the very location where Saint John penned the Book of Revelations. Home to 3000 people and so small the perimeter of the island could be driven around in just an hour, the charm of Patmos stands out immediately after stepping off the ferry from Kos. Each corner truly encapsulates a part of history with the most beautiful churches well over 1000 years old and an off-grid ambiance - it’s a no-brainer why supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss returned for vacation 3 years in a row.

After 20 minutes of taking in the island views through the taxi window, we arrived at what could only be described as a slice of serenity. The Patmos Aktis Suites & Spa hotel suites encapsulated tranquillity and once I had walked into the lobby, I knew this would be my ultimate ‘switch off’ trip. Being the only 5-star hotel on the island, the resort boasts 56 suites, 2 waterfront restaurants and a five-star wellness centre with a curated menu of treatments to rejuvenate body and mind.

If that wasn’t enough to blow me away, I was then taken to the Aegean suite which I’d call home for the next four days and stood in awe for a good 15 minutes just taking in the breathtaking view that awaited me. With three distinct balconies to choose from, I was spoiled for choice as to which postcard-worthy view would greet me each morning. The spacious rooms and minimalist feel interior meant each time I stepped into the room a calmed energy had taken over me.

We ended day 1 at the Pfelsis Tavern, the hotel’s beach front restaurant feasting on the freshest catch of the day to succulent lamb chops that seemed to melt in your mouth, and pasta dishes so exquisite that you would believe you were transported to Italy itself. The waterfront ambiance added an extra layer of magic to the dining experience. In that moment I knew it was one of those unforgettable dinners that I’d constantly be trying to explain how amazing it was to anyone who dares to listen.

Did I mention this trip was a gateway to heaven? Day 2 involved a slow morning soaking up the sun followed by an invigorating massage and facial in the hotel’s spa. Upon walking into the boutique space I was met with the warmest welcome from the friendliest staff and the most relaxing ambience - I immediately felt a sense of serenity. The spa experience meant the rest of the day was pure bliss, eating, sunbathing and later that evening floating through the streets of Chora with that carefree vacation energy and snapping pictures of everything in sight.

Every getaway is incomplete without a boat trip and Patmos Aktis exceeded expectations with their island hopping experience. Setting sail from the hotel’s private beach, the luxury speed glided through the Aegean sea, showcasing turquoise waters you thought you’d only find in the Maldives. The breathtaking views of different islands were unmatched and the sense of calamity healed me in a way only the sound of the ocean does. To end a perfect day we ended with an even more perfect lunch at Pantellis, on Marathi Island. The open air restaurant felt like a seaside oasis nestled in nature as we were surrounded by the most vibrant flowers and lush greenery that enhanced the feeling of ‘island living’. I savoured every bite of lunch from the warm bread to the crispy fries, to the shrimp pasta and delicately cooked fish of the day.

Between watching the sunrise each morning, exploring a new pocket of the island, indulging in the cutest fashion boutiques in local towns Skala & Chora and island hopping between Marathi Island & Arikoi I learnt exactly what serenity felt like. Patmos is one of those getaways where time seems to slow down, offering a refuge from the daily hustle and bustle of my usual city life.
