New York Fashion Week was teeming with very strange bags

Pigeons, pufferfish and pastries: peculiar arm candy is the biggest fashion trend of the 2020s so far.

One key takeaway from New York Fashion Week is that we are undeniably in the time of weird accessories. In recent years we’ve seen a Loewe bag in the shape of an heirloom tomato, a Moschino bag that looks like someone threw their entire spaghetti dinner over it, and a JW Anderson bag in the shape of a pigeon.

Ballerina flats have overtaken footwear, but now they're coming for bags. Sandy Liang, the independent NY designer known for her girly, pink aesthetic, sent a bag down the catwalk which looked like a giant ballet pump. It is entirely functional and will be on sale when the new collection comes out next year. Balletcore is still going strong, clearly.

The designer is known for her fun, colourful, 70s-inspired bohemian style, and this season was no different. One new addition to the runway, though, was the plush toy-like bag in the shape of a platypus. Or is it an alligator? We're not really sure.

Dauphinette

The dreamy NY brand's latest runway served up bakery-inspired bags. Made in collaboration with Yukiko Morita at Pampshade, they are crafted from real, surplus bread which would otherwise have been discarded. Handmade in Japan, the loaves are baked, hollowed out and coated in an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, eco-friendly resin. The brand's Bag-uette is a fan favourite (currently sold out, sorry!) but this season it was decorated with vintage brooches, pearls and rhinestones. Another star of the catwalk was a one-of-one giant croissant bag.

Tyler McGillivary

“Mermaiden” was the title of Tyler McGillivary's recent show, which is clearly reflected in the nautical motifs, shells and even having Aquamarine's Sara Paxton open the runway. One particularly intriguing addition to the New York Fashion Week collection was the pufferfish bag. While the bag is currently decorative, the design team are looking into how to make this a functional item! Word is, 3D printing isn't off the table.

While these fresh-off-the-runway bags are not yet available, we've compiled some other gems to satisfy your weird bag needs!
