Here's why My Lady Jane season 2 isn't happening

My Lady Jane, we're so sorry — the world simply wasn't ready for you. The wildest historical romantasy series ever to hit our screens, Prime's My Lady Jane, was a brief, bright beacon amongst a sea of dull period dramas — and it has officially been cancelled after just one season.

ICYMI, the premise of My Lady Jane was equal parts unhinged and genius: it's a retelling of the story of Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader), the “nine days queen,” who succeeded the British throne after the death of her cousin, Edward VI (Jordan Peters) — but in this version, the country isn't divided between Protestants and Catholics (how very dull!) but rather, between “Verities” (normal people) and “Ethians" (people who can shapeshift into animals. Jane is a total badass herbalist, while her enemies-to-lovers husband, Guildford (Edward Bluemel), is a horse-by-day, man-by-night. I told you — it's completely nuts and I loved every minute.

When the show was officially cancelled after its first season, its star, Ed Bluemel (aka horseman Guildford) had a full on horse-themed meltdown on Instagram, posting horsey memes, horsey BTS pics, horsey DMs and a screenshot of a Google image search for "sad horse." Bluemel evidently feels the loss of the bonkers show as much as we do. After all, after My Lady Jane, other romances just don't hit the same. What do you mean they're just ordinary people who can't shapeshift into horses?? Where is the fun in that???

The premature ending of My Lady Jane is a travesty. So why did Prime decide not to renew the show?

Why we won't get My Lady Jane season 2

From what I can tell, everyone who watched My Lady Jane was on board. The show has a critical score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is — well — basically perfect. The show also has a small but mighty fanbase. Fan edits on TikTok have hundreds of thousands of views and likes. When the show's cancellation was announced, devastated tweets racked up thousands of likes on X. A petition asking Prime to reconsider their decision has already been signed by over 5,000 people.

Nevertheless, it seems that despite its passionate fans, Prime decided that there simply weren't enough viewers to warrant a second season.

For now, unless Prime does reconsider its cancellation or the show is picked up by another streamer, it looks like this is the end for My Lady Jane. And it's a real shame, because the final episode of season 1 seemed to be setting up for a lot more horsing around in season 2. After all, Emily's evil cousin Mary is still on the throne! Edward still hasn't made his official return from the dead! War still rages on between the Verities and the Ethians! For now, we'll just have to satisfy ourselves with the knowledge that, in this version of the story, Jane managed to keep her head — and rode off into the sunset astride her husband. And what could be more beautifully bizarre than that?
