If seeing Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando's joint slay at the Oscars 2025 caught you by surprise, we have a lot to catch you up on. Though in the last few years Cyrus has been making headlines with the breakup anthem “Flowers,” at home, she's been happily in love for a while.
Since finalising her divorce with Liam Hemsworth — famously the inspiration for the aforementioned song — in 2020, Miley Cyrus has been romantically linked to fellow musician Maxx Morando.
Maxx Morando is best known as the drummer of Los Angeles-based rock band Liily, which was set up in 2016. Previously, Morando was also the drummer of another L.A. band called The Regrettes from 2015–2018. As a musician, he also produced “Handstand” and co-produced “Violet Chemistry” from Cyrus's 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation.
Born in 1998, Morando is notoriously private so, outside of his relationship with Cyrus, little else is known about his personal life. He has no Wikipedia page, and you likely won't find pictures of him on the internet if he's not accompanying Cyrus — but, luckily, he often does. The Oscars 2025 brought many eyes to the couple, but their relationship goes back a while.

March 2, 2025: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando attend the Oscars (and Vanity Fair party) together
Debuting her fresh bleached brows, Miley Cyrus attended the Oscars 2025 to present the award for Best Sound alongside Miles Teller and she did not arrive on her own. The star graced the red carpet alongside her boyfriend Maxx Morando wearing a stunning black sequinned gown by McQueen, which perfectly matched the brooch on Morando's lapel.
Later that night, the duo changed into more casual but still coordinating 'fits for the Vanity Fair Oscars party, where Cyrus, wearing Margiela, debuted micro bangs and Morando ditched his black leather brogues for white sneakers.
February 16, 2025: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando attend the SNL50: The Anniversary Special
Just a couple of weeks before the Oscars, Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando graced another photocall together, this time on the other side of the U.S. The duo traveled to New York City to attend the SNL50: The Anniversary Special at 30 Rockefeller Center where she performed her hit track "Nothing Compares 2 U" with Brittany Howard and The Roots. A couple of days prior, on Valentine's Day, the two attended the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert at Radio City Music Hall alongside Cyrus's mother, Tish Cyrus. Cyrus performed “Flowers” for the event.
February 2, 2025: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando attend the 2024 Grammys together
Though Miley Cyrus walked the red carpet solo, she and Maxx Morando were spotted together backstage at the 67th Grammy Awards. Cyrus received her third Grammy ever for "II Most Wanted" with Beyoncé during the event.
November 20, 2024: Miley Cyrus opens up about her relationship with Maxx Morando with Harper’s Bazaar
In a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, Miley Cyrus opened up about her relationship with Maxx Morando at length, sharing that “he’s very similar to [her]” since they "just don’t take life too seriously.”
Despite their similarities, Cyrus also revealed the two are very different as well, mainly because of their six-year gap. “He looks at life really differently than I do,” she said. “He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters. … Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit. I’m like, Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this? And he’s like, On Reddit it says blah, blah, blah.”
In the interview, Cyrus also revealed she often tends to work with the people she loves most, and Maxx is no exception. “I worked with my dad forever. That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other. I’ve always worked with the people that I love,” she said. “And Maxx just inspires me so much.”
February 7, 2024: A source claims Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando are living together
Speaking to People, a source close to the couple revealed Cyrus and Morando had moved in together. “She is very happy with him,” the source said. “Miley has changed a lot in the past couple of years. She seems more calm and harmonious. Everyone loves Maxx. He’s a great guy. She is very happy with him. He’s private and doesn’t like being in the press. It’s been good for her.”
February 4, 2024: Maxx Morando supports Miley Cyrus during her big night at the 2024 Grammys
Miley Cyrus scored her first two Grammys during the 2024 ceremony and Maxx Morando was her plus one for the night. The two were seen together all throughout the night, even sharing a sweet kiss for the cameras after her win. However, Cyrus and Morando were not alone, her mother, Tish Cyrus, and sister, Brandi Cyrus, also shared a table with the couple. In her speech, Cyrus referred to Morando as “my love.”
March 15, 2023: A source says Miley Cyrus is the “happiest she’s been in a long time"
Speaking to People about Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando's relationship, a source claimed: “She’s the healthiest and happiest she’s been in a long time. Everyone was blaming her for the divorce [from Liam Hemsworth] and calling her this wild child, but that wasn’t fair. Their relationship and marriage was toxic, and she was heartbroken.”
Another source also claimed Cyrus was attracted to Morando for his “drama-free” tendencies. “He has no interest in being a huge celebrity; he’s very low-key. Miley loves these qualities. Miley can be herself. They are supportive of each other’s careers. Miley is enjoying life and things are great.”
March 9, 2023: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando attend a Versace show together
Though they didn't pose together, Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando were seen hand in hand at Versace’s autumn-winter 2023 fashion show, which took place in West Hollywood.
January 1, 2022: Maxx Morando supports Miley Cyrus during her New Year’s Eve special, on and off the stage
Maxx Morando traveled to Miami to support Miley Cyrus during her NBC holiday special, Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party. The duo were spotted backstage at the event, as well as enjoying a vacation together in the city. Morando's band, Liily, also partook in the special.
A source told Hollywood Life: “Miley insisted that Maxx’s band perform at her NYE special, and this was not something up for debate. Music is what bonds them together and they love nothing more than creating beautiful sounds when it is just the two of them.”

November 2021: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando attend the Gucci Love Parade show in L.A. together
Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando made their public debut attending the Gucci Love Parade show in Los Angeles hand in hand. Not only did the event mark the first time the two were photographed together, but Cyrus also posted Morando to her Instagram grid for the first time while recapping the event. Love parade, indeed.
September 2021: Maxx Morando designs a look for Miley Cyrus's festival run
Speaking to Vogue, Miley Cyrus revealed Maxx Morando was behind one of the looks she wore during her 2021 festival run across Summerfest in Milwaukee and Music Midtown in Atlanta. Morando joined forces with Shane Kastl for the piece.
“This look is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between two of my favourite emerging artists, Maxx Morando and Shane Kastl,” Cyrus said at the time. “Shane used existing pieces I've collected over time and customised Maxx's cartoon characters [within] his construction. Their collaboration is the perfect example of sustainability becoming the next fashion phase, and it proves that anything can be reinvented, which resonates with me deeply.”
Summer 2021: Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando go on a blind date
Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando's love story started with a blind date, Cyrus herself admitted in an interview with British Vogue. “We got put on a blind date,” Cyrus recalled about the 2021 date in 2023. “Well, it was blind for me and not really for him. I thought, ‘The worst that can happen is I leave.’" Well, lo and behold, that did not happen.
