The Mean Girls movie musical features a few very strategic and surprising cameos, including one from Megan Thee Stallion — but Meg wasn't the only music icon considered for a quick role in the 2024 remake.
According to the film's co-directors, Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne, they were looking for a certain star to play the truly iconic role of Glen Coco. Yes, as in, “You go, Glen Coco!” When thinking about what to keep and what to update for the new movie, they worked through the comedic scenes until landing on the Glen Coco moment, when Damian (played by breakout star Jaquel Spivey) hands out Candy Cane-grams to Cady's class and has “none for Gretchen Wieners, bye.”
“There’s certain comedy that that flew and was funny 20 years ago, that just doesn’t fly today. We all knew that," Jayne told The Hollywood Reporter. "But there are certain iconic lines where we would joke that there would be riots in the streets if it wasn’t in there. Like ‘You go, Glen Coco!’ But when we were like, ‘Who’s [going to play] Glen Coco?’"
They had a very big name in mind, and one that probably would have broken the internet beyond repair had it happened. “Who can it be? I remember us going, could we ask, like Harry Styles?” added Perez. “We were like, Harry Styles could be Glen Coco!” Jayne said. However, the cameo was not to be; the co-directors ended up moving on from that idea, and a million hearts were unknowingly broken in the process. Oh, what we could have had.
However, their workaround was equally great, and a fun, campy, meta touch for original Mean Girls fans. “Then we were like, hold on, we love to break the fourth wall: What if we are all Glen Coco? So, after 20 years, we can all feel like Glen Coco," said Jayne. As noted by THR, no one actually plays the legendary character; the line is said directly to the camera to make the audience feel like they are Glen Coco. Go… us?
