Before Barbie, Margot Robbie had a brunette era

Barbie’s leading blonde wasn’t always blonde.

Looking back, it seems impossible that actor Margot Robbie was ever anything but blonde. Sure, she's changed up her look for roles in the past, like Harley Quinn's platinum hair with pink and blue streaks or Queen Elizabeth I's red curls, but the actor herself has almost become synonymous with blonde, especially now that she's played the iconic blonde, stereotypical Barbie.

However, did you know Margot actually had a short but sweet brunette era? And what better time to revisit it than now?

For a few months in 2014, Margot Robbie dipped her toes into the brunette world with a deep, rich espresso color that totally transformed her look and made her eyes absolutely sparkle. The actor debuted the look at the Oscars around March and kept it going for a bit.

She even wore the colour to the Met Gala, but was back to her signature blonde after about two months. (Hey, as a fellow lifelong blonde, I get it!)

Now, her brown hair might be a thing of the past, but we have to point out that the darker strands did make Margot look even more like her Barbie co-star Emma Mackey than ever. There's been some chatter about the two actors and their similar looks; Robbie actually addressed their doppelgänger status during the Barbie promo.

"I've been getting told for years that I look like the girl from Sex Education, who's Emma Mackey," Robbie said, adding that their similar looks were almost written into the movie.

“We were gonna do this whole joke about us looking similar, [but] once we got all dressed up as our Barbies, we were kind of like, 'We don't look that similar.' When she's got her brown hair, and I've got my blonde hair, so we didn't put that joke in the movie.” But when Robbie does have dark hair, well, the two could be at least sisters.

Now that Robbie has played Barbie herself, she's going to be more synonymous with blonde than ever. But make no mistake: the many hairstyles she sports in the movie are actually mainly wigs. Plus, we're still crushing on those brunette strands.
