As the denim pendulum inevitably swings away from baggy, wide-leg cuts toward straight-leg and boot-cut styles, it’s only a matter of time until skinny jeans finally make the comeback trend forecasters have been warning us about since March. Thankfully, Margot Robbie just made a fresh case for the best barrel leg jeans that could slow down the trend cycle.
On November 4, just a few days after news broke that Robbie welcomed her first child with Tom Ackerly, the Barbie actor was spotted on a stroll in Los Angeles with her husband and newborn. Dressed in an elevated take on the classic white T-shirt and jeans, Robbie reached for a short-sleeve white blouse with feminine, ruffled details, which she dressed down with loose-fitting overalls featuring the controversial barrel silhouette.

If you’ve been intrigued by the barrel jeans trend but afraid to look like you’ve just stepped out of an Old West saloon—or be teased for your “Gen-Z look” like one millennial Glamour editor—barrel dungarees may be a great place to start. While they still feature a curved leg that tapers at the ankles, the loose-fitting denim bib keeps the silhouette from ballooning out from the waist, creating a more natural, relaxed look than some other horseshoe jeans.
Still, brands like M&S and Gap have released more subtle takes on the trend if you’re just not into overalls.
Who knows, you might just find yourself going full balloon trousers once you realise how little effort it takes to look cool in a pair of barrel jeans.
