Our multi-talented, multi-hyphenated, flute-playing queen Lizzo has the strongest fan base ever – so strong, she's just won the MTV VMAs ‘Video For Good’ 2022 award. But sadly, Lizzo is no stranger to hate.
Most recently, comedian Aries Spears mocked Lizzo's weight in an interview. We're not going to repeat all the deeply offensive body-shaming comments he made here, but he ended his “speech” by saying: ‘Her music’s hard… her body ain’t.’

While some referred to it a pure projection, others were upset with how a Black comedian stepped out of his place to comment on a Black woman's body with no regard to her mental health. Choosing that, instead of championing her talent, hard work and craft.
Social media came to Lizzo's rescue before Lizzo could even step up and talk, pointing out that body size isn't a direct correlation to health, especially since we're all so used to seeing Lizzo being her fit self: performing in heels; while playing the flute; jumping around a big stage without missing a note or beat or collapsing out of breath. Basically, our girl is working overtime.

“This is disapointing (to say the least) because Aries used to be funny. IDK if he thought a "Lizzo is fat" joke was low hanging fruit or if he's triggered seeing her get the support he wishes he got when his career stalled as a result of his weight, bu this ain't it," says user @bombusername. Another user @SupernovaMomma wrote: “I'm not RTing that video but Aries Spears is filled with a bunch of self hate. That was disgusting to watch. I couldn't even finish. So hateful, hypocritical, and delusion."
Just give her an award already.
Eventually, Aries doubled down on his critique, posting videos addresing the Lizzo fanbase. But Lizzo came with the classiest of all clapbacks, in true Lizzo form.
During her acceptance speech for ‘Video For Good’, Lizzo addressed the body-shaming controversy. “And now, to the bitches that got something to say about me in the press," she says as the crowd roars. “You know what, I'm not gonna say nothing. They be like, why don't you clapback, why don't you clap back? Bitch, because I'm winning, I'm winning…”
Good for you, Lizzo. Beyonce said it best: “Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper.”
