It's In The Eyes
Gone are the days where make-up artists were championing the bare eye, no mascara or liner, minimalist look; and as the average "real" woman, I'm not totally sad about it. I distinctly remember last season at Giambattista Valli where Val Garland reminded us that some make-up looks are best left to the catwalk: and "no mascara" is one of them.
On that note, let's talk SS14 LFW, where today we've seen a whole lot of eye action! "Lashings and lashings of mascara", says Val Garland of the Miami cool inspired girl at Preen. "I'm adding layers to the top and bottom lashes". Val went on to teach us a famous trick amongst drag queens. "If you have thin lashes, coat them in loose powder and then layer mascara. Result? A thicker, fuller flutter".
And then there's eye liner. Sam Bryant gave the Margaret Howell girl a makeover. "She never wears make-up but this season I've persuaded the designers to let me add liner. And so far they've said yes!" exclaimed Sam. "I'm sweeping a thin gel line MAC (£15) across the upper lashline - it may be subtle, but it makes all the difference!"
Let's not forget the girls who went grunge and were given the killer combo of both liner and mascara, as seen at Mulberry and Jonathan Saunders.
Mulberry: "To clash with the ultra pretty collection, I'm giving the girls heavy eye make-up", explained the LParis make-up artist. "I'm using a L'Oreal Paris liquid liner (£6.50) along the waterline and in between the lashes; and then I'm layering two mascaras: L'Oreal Paris' False Lash Flutter (£11) and L'Oreal Paris' Miss Manga (out in Feb)".
Jonathan Saunders: Lucia Pieronis 90's, slept-in eye make-up! "I'm using MAC's Technakohl liner in Blacktrack and Graphicblack (£14) all around the eye. For a "third-day", lived-in feel I'm patting MAC's Shine Mix in medium (15) on the lids and I'm coating the bottom lashes in MAC's Haute And Naughty Lash (£18) - it's all very heavy, and very black."
