Remember last year when Kit Harrington controversially compared his experiences as a man to the every day sexism faced by women in the television and film industry? Well, he's finally admitted that he was wrong.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 30-year-old Game of Thrones star discussed his use of the word 'sexism', saying: "I was wrong there... Sexism against men is not something I should have really said. I think what I meant was, being objectified."
Harrington, who is newly engaged to long-term partner and ex-GoT co-star Rose Leslie, faced backlash in 2016 following an interview with The Sunday Times where he explained (or "mansplained" as Twitter users labelled it) that he had experienced "sexism", saying: "I think there is a double standard. If you said to a girl, "Do you like being called a babe?" and she said, "No, not really," she'd be absolutely right. I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks. It's demeaning.
"Yes, in some ways you could argue I've been employed for a look I have. But there's a sexism that happens towards men. There's definitely a sexism in our industry that happens towards women, and there is towards men as well. At some points during photoshoots when I'm asked to strip down, I felt that. If I felt I was being employed just for my looks, I'd stop acting."
While Harrington's initial comments stirred up confusion, he did have a point. No one - regardless of gender - deserves to be objectified. However, sexism is an entirely different issue and his recent admission suggests he now understands that.
