From the Great British Sewing Bee to knitting groups like Stitch and Bitch, and a gamut of crafting blogs, picking up a needle and thread has never been cooler. And now, thanks to artist Inge Jacobson, we're considering cross stitch in a completely new light to its home economics class origins.

Jacobsen takes magazine covers and fashion advertisements, and 'hijacks' them with needlework, using embroidery "as a way of connecting femininity from the past with the present" and to make viewers "acknowledge the surface of the photograph and look at it, rather than through it, thereby seeing it as an object".

Magazine covers from GQ and British Vogue to Dazed and Confused, and celebrities from Cara Delevingne to Beyonce have been given the needlepoint treatment, and Inge's intricate, and extremely realistic cover creations can take days to complete - her version of Ashley Greene's GQ cover took 32 hours.
