Last night while attending the 2024 Met Gala, Gigi Hadid served up an A+ lesson in understanding the assignment.
For context: the evening's theme “The Garden of Time” proved to be one of our favourites in recent years, offering an open concept and plenty of room for experimentation and interpretation. Of course, given the nature element, we expected to see “groundbreaking” florals, and Gigi delivered with a jaw-dropping floor-length, off-the-shoulder, Thom Browne gown trailing with yellow roses to match the dress code.
“I'm literally wearing a sculpture by Thom Browne and his team,” Gigi proudly told Vogue's red carpet host, La La Anthony. “[There's] 2,800,000 beads just on the dress alone. It took 20 people 5,000 hours to work on this look and 70 people worked on it [in total]. So I'm just so honoured to be here presenting this for them. We had so much fun with the theme. Thom really wanted the attention to detail to be obvious and worthy of a museum,” she explained.
But a closer inspection of her whole look revealed details on details. For starters, her diamond choker necklace picked up the two main colours of her dress: white and yellow. And, as Gigi gesticulated while fan-girling over her look, we got a few flashes of her hands, too, which revealed nail art that also matched her gown.
A close-up confirmed that the model updated her classic ballerina-shaped French tip nails with teensy yellow 3D rosebuds perched on top for added intricacy. And beneath there were even tiny vines and leaves painted on.
It proved to be the most romantic manicure of the evening and a further celebration of her show-stopping homage to The Garden of Time.
The evening saw attendees including Gigi Hadid get early access to this years fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (which will open to the public from 10th May). Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion will celebrate 250 fragile garments that normally lay “sleeping” in the archives.
