I’m a beauty writer and I can’t stop reaching for this £12 glow-boosting skin tint

I tested e.l.f.'s ‘filter in a bottle’ complexion booster to see if it's actually worth the hype.

  • Tester: Shani Cohen, GLAMOUR's Beauty Commerce Writer.
  • Shade: Shade 5 Medium/Tan.
  • Tested for: Over 1 year.
  • Pros: Versatile can be used as a primer, foundation or highlighter. Contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and squalane.
  • Cons: Not super long-lasting due to it being light coverage.

As someone who’s got olive-toned skin that’s relatively dry and occasionally reactive, I’m always a bit wary of anything too heavy, shimmery or fragranced. But this primer/foundation/highlighter all-in-one has a creamy, hydrating texture that feels lightweight and comfortable - rather than greasy or sticky. Not only that, but I love that it doesn’t cling onto my dry patches or caused my skin to break out.

When I’m in the mood for those no makeup makeup days, I’ll wear the Liquid Filter completely on its own with a touch of concealer and call it a day. It gives me just the right amount of coverage to even out my skin tone and add warmth, but still lets my natural skin peek through. When I want a touch more, I layer it with my usual cream products - Refy Bonzer and MERIT Blush Balm - and it blends like a dream.

The thick doe-foot applicator is really satisfying to use and makes it easy to swipe on in seconds - ideal for me because most mornings I’m either doing my makeup in a rush or on the go. If I do want some extra coverage (hello hormonal breakouts), I tend to mix it into my matte foundations to enhance that glow and skin-like effect.

While I’m a huge fan, if I had to say one negative it would be that it’s not super long wearing due to it being lightweight - but I’ve had better results when I pop a good setting spray over the top for that hold. Also, if you’re someone who prefers a full coverage matte look, this is probably not the product for you.

That said, if you love that fresh, barely-there makeup look and want something that gives you a proper sunkissed glow - like you’ve just got back from holiday (even if you’ve just been sweating it out on the Central line) - this is 100% worth a spot in your makeup bag. Especially now it’s down to £12 in the Prime Day sale. Honestly, it would be rude not to.
