Dua Lipa is taking a walk down memory lane. Her latest look is an ode to an unforgettable Y2K trend: the “pouf” hairstyle. It was everywhere in the late 2000s, from The Hills star Lauren Conrad to Jersey Shore to Lindsay Lohan.
The pouf could be attained in a few different ways, including pulling your fringe up and back, creating some volume and pinning it back; teasing your hair; or wearing the infamous Bump-It (remember those foam inserts that gave your hair extra height?). Poufs walked the hallways at school and the red carpet. Now, nostalgia fan Dua Lipa has brought the pouf into 2024, putting her spin on the style with a voluminous ponytail.
Dua wore her take on the pouf to a YSL Beauty event in Paris on March 25, though her version was less Lauren Conrad and more French film star. The musician's dark red hair was teased up a few inches right at the front, then pulled into a thick, flowing ponytail at the crown of her head.
Unlike the poufs of the past, Dua left her bangs down and out, pulled to one side of her face instead of pinning them up with the rest of her hair. She wore minimal makeup for the event, not even a trace of her go-to Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick in Scenic Brown.
The singer has frequently referenced the late ‘90s and early ’00s via her wardrobe and glam – whether that's with a butterfly bikini that looks as though it flew right out of the year 2000, or a lace-up corset top Christina Aguilera definitely would have worn during her Stripped era.
Even Dua's current red hair is reminiscent of the ‘00s, so we’re not super surprised that she's bringing back the pouf…with a modern spin, of course. What's next: newsboy caps? A big chunky belt? Butterfly clips? We never know what to expect with Dua, and that's exactly why she's one of our forever faves.
