Demi Lovato—who uses both they/them and she/her pronouns—is currently getting ready to release her next album, Holy Fvck, and the just-released lyrics from her song “29” certainly seem to call out her ex Wilmer Valderrama.
The song, the sixth track on her upcoming album, was previewed in a Discord “listening” party and some of the lyrics are now up on Genius:
Thanks to a snippet posted online, you can hear a bit of the melody. It's suuuper rock-and-roll:

Let's get into it. Lovato hasn't said explicitly who the song is about, but she dated the That 70s Show star for years…starting when she was a teenager. The timeline goes something like this: She had a crush on him when they met, but because she was 17 at the time (he was 29), he turned her down. She's said this—that he backed off because she was underage—on multiple occasions, both in her documentary Simply Complicated (per Us) and in an interview with Complex. In that article, published in 2015 when they were together, Lovato says, “Then we became really good friends, and he was there for me through a number of situations and breakups and whatever. Then as I got older and we grew closer, it was like, 'Hey, maybe we should try this thing out.’ We did, and we’ve basically been together ever since.” So, okay, by “getting older,” she means she turned 18, because they were an official couple not long after, per BuzzFeed.
The pair moved in together but broke up for good in 2016, and Lovato hasn't said much about it since, except that she missed him (relatable). The pair got lunch in 2018 and it seemed…amicable?
However, Demi Lovato is now 29 years old, the age Valderrama was when they met (she turns 30 on August 20, the day after her album comes out), and with age comes wisdom, so perhaps she's looking back and thinking…WTF? Maybe she realises that from the perspective of a 29-year-old (most of them, anyway), a teenager is not really an adult or a peer. Or hey, maybe not. Maybe it's just a song. Curious-eyes emoji.
