The Formula 1 season kicked off this month, so we went behind the scenes at the Melbourne Grand Prix with BBC F1 host, Suzi Perry. Suzi has been covering the Formula 1 since 2013 - before that she was the BBC's MotoGP motorcycle racing correspondent for 13 years. Scroll down for Suzi's photo diary from the Melbourne F1 race day...

Always Be Prepared

"My day kicks off with the papers and a pot of Earl Grey tea. F1 evolves on a daily basis: I have to keep a constant eye on all the news and be up-to-date with any changes that may be happening. During a race weekend I like to read the local papers and understand how they see the sport."

Arriving At The Office

"Wherever we are in the world, the TV compound is my office. It's home to all the global broadcasters who show the F1 - we all know each other well and often share footage, it's fun to chat in lots of different languages. It's where I can see our interviews being edited and view the content that will appear in the show."

Catching Up With The Competition

"These are my girlfriends at Sky Sports, Kate (left) and Rachel (right). Pre-race we're usually rushing around but trying to stay cool. It's always very exhilarating."

A Genuine Australian Koala

"I love the Melbourne race. The Australians create such a great party atmosphere. Over the weekend 300,000 fans flood into Albert Park to see the spectacle. I thought the way they placed these toy koalas was very cute!"

Countdown To Race Time

"This is just before the race starts, minutes before the drivers appear on the grid. David Coulthard (my co-host) and I are running through the interviews that we have planned - we have such a limited time to get it right, so it's good to have an idea of how we will work together."

Watching The Action Unfold

"I watch the race with the crew on our BBC monitor. We're sitting outside the Team Williams hospitality area here. I make notes throughout the race so I can ask drivers about certain overtakes or pit stops - in this shot I'm explaining something to our fab sound man, Dan."

The Art Of The Live Interview

"After the race, we decide which drivers I will talk to. This is Carlos Sainz Jnr, his dad was a top class double World Rally Champion. Melbourne was Carlos' first F1 race; he came 9th, which was a good achievement for him and great for his team Torro Rosso. I use a communication system called 'talkback' so I can simultaneously listen to Carlos, the director, and my producer, who lets me know how I'm doing for time. When we are live, he also directs me to any breaking stories - it can all get quite noisy while you're trying to have a conversation."

Meeting The Winner

"Lewis Hamilton won! We have a close relationship with Lewis and it's always fun to chat with him, especially if he has been victorious. This year he has a chance to defend his title and become the first British driver to win back-to-back Championships. He had just been presented his trophy by Arnold Schwarzenegger."
