If mules were big the summer just gone, they'll be huge next season if Chanel's Metiers d'Art show has anything to do with it.

Karl Lagerfeld introduced a new shoe silhouette at his catwalk spectacular in Rome last night - a take on the mule, with a snake weaving around the heel, over the top of a fat pearl. Models wore them with black lace hosiery; French coquettishness in shoe form. We want them madly, rationalising such a buy on the tenuous grounds that they're great transitional shoes.

The Metiers d'Art show features special edition Chanel pieces that highlight the brand's craftsmanship. It's also become a byword for the most extravagant and grand fashion shows, typically hosted in far-flung destinations. This year's was staged in Rome, where Lagerfeld created a romantic vision of a Parisian neighbourhood, complete with cheese shops, wine merchants, bakeries, an oyster bar and a cinema.
Other than the shoes, what did the collection look like? There was lace, shiny leather, chiffon, smokey eyes and messy, Bardot-like hair. Master of dishevelled French sexiness Carine Roitfeld will want all of this next season.
