According to Variety, the actor was set to appear opposite Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam but left the project for unknown reasons. Cumberbatch and Chastain were to star as siblings in the movie. Meanwhile, Emma Stone - who is also linked to the project - was earlier said to be considering leaving the production in June with Mia Wasikowska lined up as her replacement.

Meanwhile, del Toro is also reportedly keen to make a new fim version of Frankenstein and allegedly wants Cumberbatch to star. The Sherlock star famously portrayed Dr. Frankenstein and his monster with Johnny Lee Miller in the 2011 Danny Boyle-directed play at London's National Theatre. SOURCE: VARIETY
