David Beckham was there (which fuelled much discussion on Twitter as some wondered why he had been chosen to present an award); Tom Cruise turned up (Stephen Fry was so excited he even used an expletive to introduce him); and Stephen Hawking managed to out-funny and outsmart every guest with just one sentence.

Eddie Redmayne has won the BAFTA for Best Leading Actor and his speech was perfect. Firstly, he brought up that time in 2013 when he vomited at the BAFTAs (it was food poisoning, not drink-related in case you were wondering); next he thanked his family, his film family and, of course, the Hawking family.
He called co-star Felicity Jones "a wonder", she looked like she was welling up, so Redmayne's wife, Hannah Bagshawe, squeezed her shoulders tenderly.

He also used the word "gargantuan" in his speech, which deserves a minor award in itself. And he managed not to cry. Well done Eddie.

It has just occurred to us that Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes are in the same room. Please PLEASE may they re-enact The English Patient for us and also for the goof of the world?

We have been thinking of possible, yet unlikely, reasons Victoria Beckham didn't fancy accompanying her husband to the BAFTAs this evening. Here is our shortlist:
She was doing the stock take at her Dover Street Market store.
She couldn't stand the idea of wearing high heels.
She wanted women all over the world to have another solo photo of her husband to gaze at (thank you).
She didn't have anything to wear.
She's still washing up after a hefty Sunday roast.
Here is her husband again (you're welcome):

Stephen Hawking just might have beaten David Beckham in terms of award presenting skills. Felicity Jones and the professor awarded Best Visual Effects to Interstellar, but not before he made the whole BAFTAs audience laugh. He also received standing ovation, which seems fair enough all things considered.
"I am particularly pleased to be presenting this award to the only person on the planet more intelligent than Stephen Fry," said Jones.
Cue this slice of genius from Hawking:
"Yes and better looking," he said.
By the way, he's wearing Burberry. Of course he is, the dapper dog.

The BAFTAs are being broadcast on BBC1 now. "Rock giants" Kasabian are performing and James Righton may or may not be thinking 'this could me'.

In case further evidence were needed that vloggers are taking over the world, Tanya Burr is here. This is, actually, her third time at the show.

The Theory Of Everything has won Outstanding British Film, presented by David Beckham. Sorry, no more spoilers until later. We're just excited.
Also, Redmayne is totally standing on Jones' dress in this picture. She doesn't appear to have noticed.

There are some very loved-up couples at the Royal Opera House tonight.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter keep gazing at each other; Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne are probably the best dressed couple (and one of the happiest, it seems); Sam Claflin and Laura Haddock look like a real-life Disney prince and princess (that dress is incredible); and Keira Knightley and James Righton have been pictured in full giggling glory.

It has come to out attention that there may be a Jerry Maguire reunion going on at the BAFTAs tonight. Both Cuba Gooding Jr and Tom Cruise are here. We don't know why. Show me the money everyone.

We'll just quickly dissect some of our favourite red carpet looks of the evening - first we give you Lea Seydoux who looks very Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars (when she wore that canary yellow dress that would have looked dire on everyone else other than herself).
Seydoux's version came with cut-out detailing, but (TAKE NOTE celebrities the world over please) revealing a hint of her ribcage, rather a side boob. Or indeed clevage, a questionable Seventies-style trend adopted by Julianne Moore and Reese Witherspoon.
Big princess dresses were few and far between (with the exception of Laura Haddock), everyone else opted for sleek, column-like gowns (please see Rosamund Pike, Dianna Agro, Natalie Dormer, Holliday Grainger and Charlotte Riley).
Special mention for Keira Knightley, who is currently nailing maternity chic. Here she is in her Giambattista Valli gown, adorned with embellishment, leather jacket worn over the top. Very good. And also a giant high five to Hannah Bagshawe, who is perfect in her embellished oyster gown and very Valentino.
There was a mix of monochrome vs colour blocking. Those who went for black and white shades include Monica Bellucci, Holliday Grainger and Rosamund Pike. Colour blocking fans included Felicity Jones, Natalie Dormer, Romola Garai and Phoebe Fox.

The BAFTAs began around 15 minutes ago. Kasabian have performed and the show is on the road.
Eddie Redmayne and The Theory of Everything is thought to take home the most awards. Stephen Hawkins himself is also in attendance.
Tonight's event will be hosted by Stephen Fry.

The BAFTAs red carpet has been awash with stars this evening, including Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon, Rosamund Pike and Eddie Redmayne, who was accompanied by his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.
David Beckham is currently trending for no other reason other than the fact he looks hotter than the sun. He's here to present the award for Outstanding Film.

Another reason to look forward to the BAFTAs this Sunday - David Beckham is attending.
The former footballer and all-round Adonis will present an award. We don't have any other details, but we imagine he'll wear a well-cut suit and make everyone else look substandard. He may even make people stop talking about Eddie Redmayne for a brief 10 minutes.
Stephen Fry will host the annual awards show once again and other guests are expected to include Keira Knightley, Benedict Cumberbatch and Reese Witherspoon.
Redmayne is mooted to pick up the Best Leading Actor BAFTA for his role in Theory of Everything, while his co-star Felicity Jones is frontrunner for Best Actress.
We'll be live blogging the show from 7pm on Sunday, so click back for all the latest news, red carpet updates and most unforgettable moments.

The 2015 British Academy Awards (BAFTA) is set to a goodun this year; The Grand Budapest Hotel receives 11 nominations. Birdman and The Theory of Everything are each nominated in ten categories. The Imitation Game has nine nominations. Boyhood and Whiplash are each nominated five times. Mr. Turner, Nightcrawler and Interstellar receive four nominations. Pride has three nominations.
The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne is nominated for Leading Actor, whilst Felicity Jones receives a nomination for Leading Actress.
Eddie exclusively told GLAMOUR late last year that he loved working with his friend Felicity: "I've known Felicity for like 10 years and she is the most brilliant [actress]. And I've always wanted to work with her, and what was great about this is Jane and Stephen's relationship is pretty intense and complicated and having a friend playing opposite you meant that we could just jump in and start working together and challenging each other and so it was great."
Scroll down to watch our interview with Eddie.
Stephen Fry will be returning to host the awards ceremony for the tenth time on 8 February and here are the nominations in full…
