Another awards season has officially come and gone. At last night's Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Anora was announced as the year's Best Picture. It also took home Best Actress for newcomer Mikey Madison, Best Director for Sean Baker, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.

Baker's indie comedy flipped the traditional rom-com formula on its head. Anora, or Ani, is an erotic dancer whose dreams seem to come true when a young wealthy Russian spontaneously proposes to her.

But what begins as a Pretty Woman fairytale soon comes crumbling down as the young man's parents make it a mission to break up the marriage. We follow Ani through a chaotic, fast-paced night as she sets out to track down her husband — and, against a backdrop of neon, glitter, and grime, she becomes increasingly disillusioned along the way.

Thanks to Baker's sharp, snappy script and Madison's gutsy performance, the film quickly became a favourite of this year's award season.

The film has also been praised for presenting a fresh take on a tired a trope, and for its thoughtful, well-researched portrayal of the sex community.

“Thank you, Brighton Beach, for lending us your beautiful backdrop and incredible community,” Madison said in her speech. “I also just want to again recognise and honour the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this entire incredible experience.”
