Say it ain't so – are ankle boots the next millennial-loved fashion staple to go out of style? Actually, I don’t think anything ever goes truly out of style — especially if you wear it with confidence — but there are certainly other styles of boots that fashion editors and influencers have been reaching for this autumn instead.
After all, a good pair of boots is a must-have for every winter wardrobe. And we’ve seen many trends come and go over the years as a result, from platform soles to shearling-lined designs. In 2024, at least, it seems a classic style has returned to reign supreme: the knee-high leather – or faux-leather – riding boot.
Originally designed for equestrian sports, the knee-high boot has became a closet staple over the years. It’s not hard to see why — the riding boot is available in a variety of different styles and colours. Plus, it’s a much warmer alternative to the tiny ankle boot – and can easily elevate even the simplest of outfits. Wear yours casually with leggings and a hoodie or a cute minidress for a night out. Whatever the outfit, knee-high boots always work.
The classic riding boot
So, are ankle boots out this season? I’ll put it this way: if I was only going to invest in one new pair of boots this season, I wouldn’t spend my money on them. Instead, I found the trendiest knee-high boots to buy right now. One thing's for sure: Whether you like a minimalist approach or prefer to make a statement, you’ll get your money’s worth with these.
Wide-leg riding boots
This version is a little more casual than the classic riding boot. While the style is inherently the same, the wider shaft gives the look a more modern silhouette. It also looks particularly cool with a miniskirt or shorts.
Boots in shades of brown
If we've learned anything from the Frye Campus craze this autumn, it’s that a boot that goes with everything doesn’t always have to be black. Brown boots can also be styled in a variety of ways, as Zendaya proves here, and are totally on trend this winter in shades of chocolate, cognac, and more.
Pointed-toe boots with kitten heels
Into the office at 9am, then straight to after-work drinks with the girls at 6pm… not a problem with these easy-to-wears, made popular by Charli XCX and other ‘it’ girls this year. There is no style better suited for a day-to-night transition. The striking toe and and small heel give the boot an elegant touch that still works for everyday wear.
Chunky boots with thick soles
Fashion girlie or not, sometimes style has to come second when it gets really icy outside. Or does it? Find a riding boot with a thick sole for something that’s stylish and practical at the same time. They’ll keep your feet dry and warm in the ice and snow – and look cool, too.
Suede boots
A trend that’s completely taken over this autumn and is sure to continue into winter 2024? The suede look. Suede bags, suede jackets, suede skirts, and yes, suede shoes — it’s what all the fashion girls are wearing. So it’s no wonder that knee-high boots would follow suit. It works well with a boho chic look, another trend that’s been omnipresent since the last Chloé show at Paris Fashion Week. Wear it with a long maxi dress, a cosy cardigan and a decorative belt and you have a look guaranteed to make you happy on even the greyest of days.
