Ana de Armas continued her pattern of Marilyn Monroe-inspired dressing as she celebrated her first Oscar nomination.
On March 11, the Blonde star arrived at the Netflix Oscar Nominee Celebration at Sunset Tower wearing a slinky nude sequins dress with a corset-inspired bustier. She paired the shimmering slip with a pair of matching heels, a green clutch, and gold bracelets. For her beauty look, de Armas wore her hair in loose waves and opted for a glowing skin routine and a pop of deep crimson on her lips.
The 34-year-old actor—who is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her portrayal of the late Hollywood icon—was clearly inspired by Monroe’s "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress, which was last worn by Kim Kardashian to the 2022 Met Gala.
Monroe's famous nude dress, which was created by Jean Louis, featured a skin-tight silhouette and was adorned with crystals as opposed to sequins. Monroe famously wore the dress to serenade John F. Kennedy for his 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962. The piece is largely considered the most expensive dress in the world after being purchased by Ripley's Believe It or Not museum for $5 million in 2016.
At the time, Kim Kardashian faced major backlash for wearing the dress, both for her outdated crash diet as well as rumours that she damaged the dress during the event. Ripley's later denied those claims in an Instagram post, writing, “Kim Kardashian wearing the dress has been hotly contested, but she did not personally damage the garment in the short amount of time it was worn at the Met Gala.” It should be noted that Kardashian wore the dress on the red carpet before switching to a replica for the rest of the party.
It's doubtful Ripley's will be lending the dress to Ana de Armas for her big night, though we can't wait to see what she wears to the Oscars.
