With Laura Terruso, the youngest woman to direct Hollywood icon De Niro, at its helm, the movie focuses on the dysfunctional interpersonal dynamics of two families from different backgrounds who are brought together for the Fourth of July festivities.
Based loosely on his real relationship with his own father, Sebastian Maniscalco plays himself as he tells his traditional Italian immigrant father, Salvo, that he plans to propose to his American girlfriend during the memorial day weekend at her wealthy parents' home. When his father insists on tagging along, Sebastian reluctantly brings him along and expects his father to embarrass him. However, by the end of the summer, the two families are unified more than ever.

Who is the team behind About My Father?
The movie is directed by Laura Terruso, who, at the age of forty, was the youngest person to direct De Niro. Impressive!
For Laura, she sought inspiration for the movie on the relationship with her Italian immigrant mother, which made her a natural and obvious choice for directing About My Father.
Speaking at the 2022 Cinecon, Robert sang her praises, saying: "Laura Terruso, the director, was terrific. She's an Italian American from Bensonhurst, New York, so she knew the world."
