The 70s maxi skirt is having a major moment and we’re thrilled about it

Every so often a trend comes along that is so right for real life, we can’t quite believe it’s actually in fashion. Right now? A 70s maxi skirt is the It item that is practically perfect for the season we’re in and comes with serious style credentials.

We spotted wafty, floaty and boho 70s maxi skirts - particularly in white cotton or trimmed with broderie anglaise - on the spring catwalks at Christian Dior in Paris and Eudon Choi and Molly Goddard in London. After last summer’s obsession with micro mini skirts that moonlighted as belts we’re thrilled that something so… easy… is having a high fashion moment.

While catwalk trends come and go - and ultimately trickle down to influence high street trends - sometimes there’s a mood that is born from a completely different medium. Street style and TikTok trends flip the fashion inspiration to trickle up. You’re likely to have seen coastal cowgirl on even the briefest of scroll sessions and the 70s maxi skirt is the piece that totally encapsulates the look.

The 70s maxi skirt has prairie vibes that are perfect for the coastal cowgirl aesthetic - even if your  nearest beach is Clacton, rather than Southern California… although it works brilliantly in the city too. Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift are both fans of our new favourite summer skirt.

But outside of being an A lister or Instagram influencer, what’s the best way to wear a 70s maxi skirt IRL? First up, we’d suggest you turn down the volume in your top half, like Taylor, and wear a fitted camisole or crop top. An oversized shirt or voluminous blouse will look like you’re drowning in fabric. Bandeau tops or little tank tops are ideal.

Tan accessories look particularly cool with crisp white and add to the relaxed beachy feel. Black sandals are obviously a monochrome match made in heaven with white and black leather flip-flops would add a chic edge to the casual skirt. If your skirt has a split up the side for ease of movement, try teaming it with a pair of brown suede cowboy boots and a hippy-ish belt slung around your hips instead.

Anything denim will toughen up pretty white cotton, as would leather, although a longline black linen waistcoat - basically 2023’s #1 top choice would be the perfect pairing. Chef's kiss.
